Mine's not really a server in the sense that it uses desktop components, but here it is regardless...

OS: Windows 7 Professional x64
Case: Silverstone LC17-B
CPU: Intel i5-2300
Motherboard: ASUS P8Z68-V LX
Memory: 16GB G.Skill DDR3-1600 1.35v
PSU: Corsair VX550W
OS HDD: 90GB OCZ Agility 3
Storage HDD(s): 2x WD Green 2TB RAID1, 2x Samsung F3EG 2TB RAID1
Server Manufacturer: Me! smile.gif
Server Usage: Web hosting, game servers, local file server, Shoutcast web radio server

Also, just for kicks, my network gear:
-- CheckPoint UTM-1 Edge N
-- Motorola NIM100 (TV)
-- EnGenius WAP300
-- Verizon FiOS 150/75 WAN

All equipment is on a 1500VA UPS, real world runtime is 90 minutes with server powered, 4 hours without.

Well i thought i'd provide some pics of my gear, try to not gag at the rats nest in my bedside computer cause its kinda bad. Case has no cable management at all and almost no room to mod some in.

Anways, here's The Stack as i call it:

The future firewall/fileserver is the top one while my bedside rig is the bottom one

Now for gut shots and specs!

Firewall/Fileserver
CPU: Pentium M 760 @ 2ghz (yes this is a mobile chip, used to be in my laptop before it disintegrated)
Cooler: Zalman CNPS7000B-ALCU (59C load temps with the fan off and almost no airflow, 45 with the fan on at 50%)
Ram: 1GB DDR-333 @ 354mhz Single Channel (stupid chipset)
Motherboard: AOpen i855GMEM-LFS S479 (got as freebie wheee.gif)
OS: WinXP Professional for now, may change once i get the hardware i need
HDDs: 40GB Hitachi Death-imean DeskStar PATA, 2x Samsung Spinpoint 40GB Sata (Raid 0, will eventually switch them out for a pair of 500s or better and raid 1 them)
Case: Salvaged old HP slimline desktop case (cramped, but gets the job done fairly well. Built like a tank too)
PSU:Stock 250W Bestec

Bedside Rig/Fileserver
CPU: Phenom II x4 940BE @ 2ghz (if i ever really need power i kick it up to 3.4, but i dont leave it there long)
Cooler: AM3 Phenom II stock cooler w/ modified fan assembly (knocks 4 degrees of load temps and gets more air where its needed)
Ram: 2x2GB Gskill DDR2-800 + 2x2GB OCZ DDR2-800 (8GB total)
Motherboard: ASUS M3A78-EM
OS: Win7 Ultimate 64-bit
HDDs: 40GB Samsung Spinpoint Sata, 120GB Fujitsu Laptop Sata, 160GB Seagate Laptop Sata
Case: Rosewill R102-P-BK (I love this case yet i hate it. Love it because i have yet to find a microATX case that matches it in terms of features/price, hate it because there's no cable management at all)
PSU: Antec Earthwatts 380W

Both machines are more or less built to be energy efficient, with the Pentium M computer staying under 40W full load (if that, previous owner said it never topped 20W) and the Phenom II rig staying below 100W full load (it definitely gets higher once i kick the processor up to 3.4 though).

The plan with the firewall/fileserver is to eventually get it set up so all data entering or leaving my room has to pass through it first (thank you dual integrated Gig-e), so i can keep track of whats going in or out, and maybe once i get some game servers up keep attackers out. I kinda needs to get a gigabit switch before i can implement it good and proper though.

Bought these a while back ago (when they were new)

Now I have 4 total I don't use, and a DL530 that are useless paperweights in my office.

Sorry for my late reply guys, I've been working...

my first experiments with CX4 were:
I bought 2x Intel NE020 CX4 PCIe x8 cards, and a 15M CX4 cable on ebay, this came to about £150 all together. All parts were sealed and new. (The cable wasn't that flexible)

My initial thoughts were, "Can this be used without a switch? between two computers?" and i found that indeed I could use it just like a normal Ethernet card, that is by assigning each card its own IP address on the same subnet, and just plugging in the cable to each NIC. I was pleasantly delighted by the speeds that I got from the benchmark.

My biggest problem I encountered was finding suitable drivers.
Unless you are running a server OS, you are will have problems, but if you want to use my particular card on your desktop then I find only the server 2003 driver seems to work on XP, and is OK with it. I had problems trying to get Windows 7 to recognize it, as it kept telling me that the driver isn't for that OS, mad.gif I didn't try any server OS's as I assume they will work fine.

This news alone has allowed me to go ahead and buy the Brocade CX4 switch, which has 48 gigabit ports and 4x CX4 ports. I plan to get a second one and team up 10 gigabit lanes, and then it will be possible for me to get CX4 speeds over 100m.
