Post Your Server!!! - Page 141

This was going to be a ESXi whitebox but I didn't want to buy a RAID card atm. So now it's just running Windows Server 2012 with Hyper V. I haven't been able to mess with it much and I probably won't until I get a RAID card and finally run ESXi. I don't want to get my virtual environment all set up just to switch over to ESX smile.gif. So right now it's running a couple of VMs to mess around with and it's my file server.

Specs:
CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1245 V2 Ivy Bridge 3.4GHz
Motherboard: ASRock Z77 Extreme4
Memory: Patriot Viper 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3 1600
Heatsink: Noctua NH-D14
Boot Drive: Samsung 840 250GB SSD
Data Storage: Seagate Barracuda 2TB x4 RAID 10
VM Storage: Seagate Barracuda 1TB x2 RAID 1
PSU: PC Power and Cooling Silencer MK III 400W Modular 80PLUS Bronze
Case: Thermaltake Level 10 GTS Snow Edition

They are not much anymore but it is a lot harder to optimize such old systems and that's part of the reason I do it instead of just building a "typical" server with new components. It not the amount of RAM you have that matters but how you use it biggrin.gif

Dell Desktop (top):
-Ubuntu Server 12.04 LTS
-512MB RAM, 1GHz Pentium 3 CPU, 40GB IDE HDD
-gigabit NIC
-used for linux things (like web server, file server, vpn, etc)

Generic 1U (bottom):
-Windows Server 2003 R2
-2GB RAM, 2.8GHz Pentium 4 CPU, 1 x 120GB IDE HDD, 1 x 80GB IDE HDD
-gigabit NIC
-used for windows things (like gaming servers mainly in my case)

Both systems I received free from work and are noisily sitting in the corner of my closet...

what do you guys think of buying pre-owned(by businesses)HP proliant servers versus building your own?? I'm thinking of getting a ML350 G5 on ebay with redudant PSUs and 2x Quad core Xeon processors. Also is ECC ram really necessary for a home server build if I go custom?

Noise. Expect a lot of fan noise.

Has to be. That's the speed of 2 Gigabit links, so he would have to be using MPIO or something similar.
