Don't need it for non-mission critical systems. Besides which, you need compatible motherboard, which increases costs.

Hi everyone! As the maker of this thread, Shouldn't I have a server too? Well I do now.. Kinda

I got all the parts in today, except for the CPU. That shipped today.

OS: WHS PP3
Case: Antec 300
CPU: AMD Athlon II X2 240E (Energy Efficient) 2.8 GHZ
Motherboard: MSI 760GM-E51
Cooling: Stock
Memory: 4 GB Mushkin Silverline
PSU: Antec Neo Exo 400W
OS HDD: WD 500GB green
Storage HDD: 2x 2TB Sata Samsung F4.
Server Manufacturer: Me

I plan on using it for Nightly backups and a file server. I might even run a minecraft server on it.
Temps, loudness, etc. : No Idea as of now.

Yay! that parts are in. (except for the CPU )

Shot of the inside. But what's a computer without a CPU. You also might notice that I am missing some SATA cables. the Motherboard only came with 1! Now I have to buy them local. They're like 3 bucks a piece.

Looks like a good setup. Will you be using your server to stream media to anything? I'm curious to know if you can stream 1080p videos without stuttering with the new format 2TB F4's.

Here's a thread on it. http://forum.wegotserved.com/index.php/topic/16349-2tb-samsung-f4eg-hd204ui-drives-question/

I don't remember or notice if the drive affected the speed of the backups or not, but it did affect my video streaming immediately.

I don't think he really cares about much cable management in his server case lol.

I don't have pics.. but

X3450, 500gb HD, 8 gigs ram, located in a datacenter actually with internap Bandwidth.

I use it for a gaming community that is basically dead now. Might donate the box to OCN.. smile.gif

Most home servers are really just serving up files and doing menial hosting tasks... and it is far cheaper to just use older desktop components than going out of the way to get a server board and ecc ram.

If we were talking a 24/7 production environment w/ ram intensive applications or databases... that would be a different story.

For the most part even when using the server as a DC and letting it handle dhcp/dns for my network, filesharing, and backups, its barely going through the paces... not really too many places for memory errors.

Also ive been running this hardware for years and am very confident on what is 100% stable in terms of memory timings/voltages. Ive had my server board and ram paired together since like 2008.

Seems like alot of you have larger machines. I noticed with running a full desktop machine as a server that power usage was pretty abysmal, so I built this:

OS: Windows 7 Ultimate (will transition to ubuntu soon..)
Case: Chenbro ES34069 (4 hot-swap bays)
CPU: Intel Atom N330 / 2.0GHz (OC), 1.60 GHz (stock) / Dual Core
Motherboard: Zotac Ion G-E
Cooling: Stock, Vantec 60mm in front
Memory: 2GB
PSU: Built-in 160W
OS HDD: 320GB Scorpio Blue 2.5"
Storage HDD:
  • 2 x WD Green 2TB (WD20EADS)
  • 2 x WD Black 1TB (WD1000FALS)
Other: SunTech PCI-E SATA and eSATA add on card (mobo only had 4 sata ports)

Uses:
  • Backup
  • Media machine (attached to a 42" LCD TV, Plays 1080P)
  • Print Server
  • Hub for small file sharing network
  • Runs miscellaneous long-running scripts

Loudness: Chenbro case fans are a little noisy. Used my noctua resistors to quiet them down a bit. Will soon replace case fans and Vantec up front with quieter alternatives.

Pics:
attached.
