OS: Ubuntu 11.04 desktop modified to make it headless
Case: HP DC7100 SFF
CPU: Pentium 4 LGA775
Motherboard: DC7100
Memory: 512mb DDR RAM 2x256mb
OS HDD: 1TB WD Caviar Green WD10EARS
Storage HDD(s): Same as above
Server Manufacturer: HP (was a desktop from work)

I use it mostly as a file server, but also use it as a media server for the PS3 and a central location for backups. 1TB may not be much these days, but I struggle to even fill 500GB at the moment, lol. This machine does very well in it's job and I am happy with it. If I need more storage I will upgrade to a home built server using a server OS.

Machine is always running cool and it is silent, it sits under my bed. I can hear the occasional hard disk noise, but it's not much.

I also use it as a PS3 media server and a torrent downloader. It only has a power and ethernet connection, so I use the uTorrent WebUI and remote desktop on the machine.

EDIT: Pics of the machine

DSCF0008.jpg

DSCF0006.jpg

I have also changed the OS since making the post. I have replaced XP Pro SP3 with Ubuntu 11.04, using Samba for shares and Transmission for torrenting. I use RealVNC client to connect to remote desktop and manage Transmission by the web interface to make this machine a proper headless unit.

After moving into our new house I wasn't sure what to do with my gear. I was thinking of putting it into the lower basement of our 4 level split home, that way they'd stay cool. But since nothing is wired up, yet, I went with my office. I'm in the middle of setting up my rack. So forgive the mess, the wife is on my ass about it daily.

attachment.php?attachmentid=219951&stc=1&d=1310811236

The cover is missing from the firewall. My CF Card died so it's running a 2.5" drive now. Not shown is my new 1U socket 775 server. That's sitting on my desk right now while I install what I need. Also not shown is my second ISP connection. Since it's a fiber connection I couldn't have it run into this room. It's load balanced into the pfSense box.

From the top down it's...
  • Dell 15" LCD
  • Rogers SMC DOCSIS 3.0 Modem
  • Belkin Wireless 'N'
  • Trendnet 24 Port Gigabit Switch
  • Watchguard Firebox II; running pfSense
  • Left is my Ubuntu Web Server
  • Right is Server 2003 with 10TB of storage. Acts as file, ftp, torrent and other crap server.

More pics and progress to come. And yes, I'm painting soon. thinking.gif

Some of you guys have some serious stuff in your homes, its amazing.
Personally, my power and cooling budget is pretty minimal so I put this together and its been running surprisingly well.

IMG_1297.jpg

Its an atom powered eeePC with 4gb of internal flash storage and a 1tb WD passport glued to the top. Its running ubuntu and crashplan and its main purpose in life is to be a remote backup server for some of my friends. It lives in an oddly shaped kitchen cabinet above my microwave, behind all those mugs.
