I think he means that most of netflix streaming is not 720p. At least the "blockbuster" titles aren't. That being said, I don't condone his piracy.

720 is just a resolution, the quality comes for the bitrate and netflix bitrate is terrible. But if you watch netflix on a 12" monitor it might look decent.

netflix is not 720p... it says it's HD but it must be downgraded a lot because it's pretty bad. I think hulu does a better job in terms of quality of video.

OS: Gentoo Linux

Case: Antec something....

CPU: AMD Phenom II x2 560 Black Edition ( Does unlock to an x4 B60 but I have no need for that on a file server so I'm running it stock.... )

Motherboard: MSI 880GM-E35 ( I got this for $10 in a combo with the cpu at Microcenter ) It's a nice board with 6 SATA 3 connectors.

Cooling: Stock cooler from my 1090t

Memory: 4 GB G.Skill Ripjaws

PSU: Antec 380w

OS HDD: OCZ 60 Gb SSD

Storage HDD(s): 2 x 1 TB RAID 1

What you use it for: Mainly a file server for my LAN, but also a Vent server for chatting with my buds...

I've had issues with bad quality from netflix, however the newer shows that were recorded in HD look fine on my 42 " 1080P LCD TV. Not 1080P but for tv watching doesn't seem to be different.

Do virtual servers count?

Anyways, right now I am running 5 VM's on my G71 for a testlab, using almost 5GB of RAM. I hope to get myself a dedicated server for ESXi and I am poking around trying to find something in the <$500 range, right now I am looking at a few 1950's on eBay that fit the bill.

I've also got two old 1U servers that I got from a friend with P4 Northwoods, 1GB RAM and 20 GB HDD's that I am trying to find a use for, might give FreeNAS a try on one of these guys.

My work just got some new VM beauties.....

HP DL 580 G7

4x intel xeon x7550, 512 GB ram, added on 12 1 gig ethernet ports, on board it has 2 10 gig copper ports as well. We do everything iscsi with our VM cluster so we need a boat load of ethernet anyway.

I just use a Western Digital Green 1.5TB hard drive in an external enclosure connected to a Netgear 3500L for all of my backups.

I used to use a Dell Dimension E520 with Windows Home Server but I stopped using it to save power.

Wow, that is some serious power, I sent two DL 580 G5's out to a remote site a few weeks ago, they were pretty close to base as far as hardware, only two sockets filled with 2.26 GHz Xeon's, 8 GB RAM and 6 x 73GB SAS drives.

Right now I've got two DL 380 G7's sitting in our back room that I installed ESXi 4.1 on, those are pretty nice 2x Xeon X5570, 20 GB RAM, 4x 500 GB 7200 RPM drives. We do all of our VM's through NFS exports off of NetApp products so I can understand where you are coming from as far as ethernet link aggregation.
