In my supermicro case I installed something like these http://www.amazon.com/Computer-Noise-Reduce-Resistor-Adapter/dp/B00880S6KA . Mine came from some corsair fans I had though but the idea is the same. It does throw a enclosure fault to my raid card but temps are fine.

Just to mention the fans are insert clip ons in an HP specific form factor and will void your warranty if you try to tweak the fan connector to fit another fan... HP are quite difficult with their warranties as we found out at work when we used non HP external SAS cables between our tape HP Ultrium G2 1/8 tape backup and the P222 SAS controller and we needed to get their support to come as all backups were screwing up on the tape drive and we even have a 4 hours emergency support contract.

I am not sure as well it is going to be the same UEFI there is on the DL380 and DL360 gen9 servers but you can probably look it up on the HP website or google it. You still have to know this server is going to still be noisy.
Thanks. Yeah I had a look at that, the 'slowest' option was Optimal Cooling which is the default.

I know it's not going to be the quietest machine in the world but running both fans at over 8000rpm at idle seems a bit silly to me.
Plug the fans into 7V ?
Plus into 12V and minus into 5V.

However before doing anything to fans I would check if there are other parts that require cooling.
My ML350 G5 had fans running fast because of hot FB-Dimm.

Your server is a newer one (no uber-Hot FB-Dimms) so I would check the chipsets.
When there are none temperature sensors visible in HWinfo64/Hwmonitor then HP remote managing will probaly be able to read them.

And when that fails then using finger can be enough to tell.
If you cannot hold it on radiator for more than 2 seconds without serious pain then it means it runs hot.

New HP servers are just running with high fan speed even at with the lowest fan setting selected, even when the temperatures are not that hot. The DL360s and DL380s Gens 8 and 9 we have at work (around 60) are at least... It's the same for the couple of DL160 G6, DL180 G6, DL320 G6 & G7, DL360s G7 and DL380s G7 I have at home, when I look at the temps through iLO they are all way under the warning and critical temp threshold and are set on the lowest fan speed setting in the bios but they still manage to make a good amount of noise. I doubt that with the way the fans slide in connector is made with the power built in on newer G9 servers that he could modify anything to the wiring to change the voltage of the for the 12v and 7v without having to cut any wires and then void the warranty or make visible and irreversible changes that would be visible to HP support and void his warranty.

I mean just doing simple connector for the fan.

A simple molex->2/3pin cable and put the minus wire into 5V.
There are also adapters which already do that.
This is the most safe method.

I had no problems with connecting standard 3 pin fan into 6pin HP fan connector in my server.
All you have to do is find the right pins(ground, power, rpm) and use bit more force.
4pin is the same but you also need to locate PWM pin.
The plastic thing will bend a bit and fan still catches connection.

Remove the fan and no evidence of mods(if done carefully).

the Specs are in my Sig.

here is a brief look aqt it though

Mobo:
gigabyte 990fxa ud7

CPU
8350

RAM
32 gig 1866

HDD:
lots ( can not fit anymore in the case)

OS
Server2012

It is taking a lot of time to set it up correctly, the file sharing is done, Teamspeak server is done now to do the backup etc...

Please see below pics.

In the pic is a pic of my daughter in front of the rack, as a size comparison. The rack is a little 27U Fusion ( 800x1000x1430).
I will be putting all 3 machines in there ( so my cases will be up for sale soon.
The cases I am looking at are 2X 4U 16x3.5 hot swap chassis.
then something that will take my watercooler and 4 SSD's and the rest of my games rig.

I am hoping to make some or most of my money back from the sale of my cases as they are still in very good condition.

Will keep you posted as I go along.

That must be expensive. What would you need that much RAM for, or is it for a business?

visualizing entire office buildings/companies, converting most all desktops and devices to dumb terminals. if it breaks it gets replaced, everything is really on the server which never breaks.
