Case: IBM x3650 case
CPU: Two Intel Xeon E5420 2.5ghz Quad-cores
Motherboard: IBM board
Memory:12x1 (12gb) DDR2 667mhz
PSU: Redundant 835w PSU(s)
Storage HDD(s): Six 15k RPM 146.3 GB IBM SAS drives in RAID 0
Server Manufacturer: IBM

I also added a MSI R7 260x 2gb because I have always wanted to game on a server, yes I know people tell me how inefficient it is but it is fun

Case: Bitfenix Shinobi
MOBO: ASRock E3C224-V+
CPU: Intel Xeon E3 1230
RAM: 32gb Kingston ECC
PSU: 430w Corsair
GFX: EVGA 8400
Storage:
  1. 1x 1TB WD Green
  2. 2x 1TB WD Red
  3. 1x 120GB Corsair SSD
  4. 2x 120GB Samsung 850 EVO SSDs in Raid 0
OS: CentOS 6.3

Server use is primarily game servers for my gaming community. Minecraft, ARK, CS:GO, that sort of stuff. Started hosting on my desktop back in the day and realized I couldn't keep hosting a server on my gaming rig 24/7(Though the server nor I ever had any performance issues) and with some donations from the community I was able to build our first server which was little more than desktop parts with Ubuntu running on it. At that time we were only hosting 1 or 2 Minecraft servers, TeamSpeak server, and some websites so it did the job. Branching into different games and more modified minecraft we needed some more power and my community being amazing as always donated almost 3/4 of this machine...

Here is my Poweredge R410, going to be used as my main ESXi node, still need to pick up some ECC RAM either 64GB or 128GB not sure yet.

So far the specs outside of onboard stuff:

2x Xeon X5570's
PERC 6/I
2x 40GB Intell 320 SSDs in Raid 1 for ESXi
Planned 64GB or 128GB of DDR3 13333 ECC RAM

Haven't address my storage needs yet but i'm looking in the direction of a FreeNAS build with ZFS pools as an iSCSI target. Have the Dell C2100 under the R410 as a potential candidate for the ZFS storage, has 12x 3.5" drive bays and supports SATA/SAS

Suggestion.

Do not run ESXi on the HDDs/SSDs at all. It's a 300MB OS, boot from USB, save all HDD slots for VMs. Makes it easier to upgrade to new versions, and not being on RAID makes it even more hardware agnostic, which is the whole point of VMs.

ESXi does not save VM configs to the OS drive, failure is not a concern. It saves them with the VMDKs on the datastores; your HDDs where the VM's "drives" files are located. Separate ESX from them as much as you can.

Heck, being an R410 it may even have an SD slot on the motherboard explicitly for ESXi. Use that. Save the SSDs for a little SQL database to mess with or something.

So here's my humble budget home server. The build is complete and now just a matter of testing these older HDDs and getting all my services installed. Powered it on just to make sure everything spins up and was pleasently surprised to hear.... nothing(almost). It is almost dead quiet, I have to listen really closely to hear a soft hum from the fans. (Yes I know the case is pink, it was my old mod that I did for the wife. She let it collect dust so I stole it for a server instead)

Specs(be gentle)
CPU: Athlon II X2 220 Dual Core 2.8 Ghz
Mobo: GIGABYTE GA-MA785GM-US2H
Memory: 12GB DDR2 800mhz
HDD: Whatever I can scrounge up
PSU: Raidmax RX 530
Onboard Gigabit NIC - Minecraft Server traffic
PCI Gigabit NIC - Data Sharing / Media Streaming
PCI N300 Wireless Adapter - Administrative functions/general use
OS: Ubuntu Server latest stable build

Services(Planned)

- OpenVPN
- SSH
- Craftbukkit Server
- PLEX Media?
- Samba Sharing
- SFTP
- Webmin?

Haha, no. The case never came with a PSU bracket so I have to craft one this weekend. The HDD is cradled from some other cables and the IDE cable hooked in it. That is also temporary until I can test all those HDDs to see which are worth keeping. After which I will rerun some cables and throws some zip ties at it.

So I want to make my server more energy efficient while trying to spend the least possible since my energy bill is $150+ even after some discounts. I'm cutting corners everywhere I can to save energy. what suggestions do you guys have?

Current specs:

NZXT H2 Case with 3x120mm fans running
Hitachi 7200rpm 5x2TB Raid 5
40GB OS SSD
Corsair 430w v2/3?
Intel G3258 3.2Ghz cpu
MSI Motherboard
Patriot 1600 4x4GB DDR3

I was thinking of maybe replacing the 5x2TB drives with 4x4TB to gain 4TB of storage and use better energy efficient drives which at this point I'm not sure what those will be. I've been out of the hardware market for a while. Also since I have the server in the basement and it is cold most of the time I might remove 1 of the 120mm fans considering that it really doesn't get hot, but that might be a bad idea or might not make a big difference.

This server is on 24/7 and is used as a, Minecraft Server or ARK server, Security camera NVR, Data storage, Plex server.

I think you may be better off looking somewhere else to lower your bill. I'd bet any money you would spend too help lower the bill would at most lower it by $10 just for swapping some of those parts. I'd first suggest picking up a kill-a-watt to help see what stuff is using.

What he said.

Replacing lights you use all the time with LED ones will drop their power usage by like 85% too, 4-5 lightbulbs can equal a strong computer.
