what does it do?
It's essentially a whole OS that runs inside an OS. So you can run several servers on one physical hardware machine.
It's also great for trialling - eg testing Windows 8 without having to find a spare HDD. If you want to find out more, then look into VirtualBox or VMWare - both other free software smile.gif

Yeah that's a real nice server you got there. How much money do you estimate it would cost to build it?

the core parts?
the CPUs are *really* cheap: ebay article #: 220892801746
the RAM *must* be the exact specs as follows: DDR2-400 ECC+REG - also rather cheap (keep in mind the CPUs cannot not do x64 wink.gif )
motherboard... this is a little trickier.. this platform is known as 'Sossaman' - there is an exhaustive thread @ XS. There were only 4 different sossaman motherboards ever built: 1 by Intel, 1 by Tyan & 2 by Supermicro. The Tyan & Supermicro boards are very rare & usually very expensive (~$250 new on ebay) - both Tyan & Supermicro mobos take the same heatsinks (see my spec list). The Intel mobo is plentiful & cheap: ebay article #: 250899514010. BUT the Intel mobo heatsinks are very different & VERY rare.. & luckily usually only ~$10-15; having said that, myself & other fellows @ XS have modded heatsinks on - its not that hard, just have to be mindful of the mounting pressure as the CPUS are bare die. The other drawback to the Intel mobo is the lack of expansion slots: 1x PCIEx8 & 1x PCI-X 64/133.

the power draw for the bare components is very low - the CPUs are really just yonah laptop chips - just the microcode has changed their ID. Folks @ XS say the following: 2x 2ghz CPUs, Intel mobo, 2x1GB ram, few fans & a HDD take ~100W under load.
my server obviously takes more as it has 13 HDDs, 2 RAID cards, a sound card & truckloads of fans..... idle: ~220W

if you want to know more, either head over to the XS thread: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?200843-Building-a-Sossaman-rig
or ask me more via here or PM thumb.gif

well I had to rma my corsair vx450 psu for fan noise so I have my spare pcp&p silencer 750w holding my sever for now. all I have to say is there is a tone of cables on that thing.

lol sossamans arent known over around these parts, i do envy that tyan board tho. you can use the copper heatsinks smile.gif

also one of my rigs with a 80+ psu pulls 105-110watts when crunching

people asked all the same questions they asked you when I posted mine up here haha
