I got it all for free or had it laying around biggrin.gif

That's awesome! You call that ghetto?! That thing is nice....I'm running a Celeron D 3.33GHz, 933MHz P3, and a 2.8GHz P4 in my servers. You have a nice server thumb.gif
And is that a Maxtor drive?! That looks like one of the newer ones

Can I join in? These are my render servers. I use them for farming out animations I create in 3D Studio Max.

1000660d.jpg
1000662e.jpg

They are Dell Precision T5400s and each runs 2x 3.0ghz quad-core xeons, 10GB of FB-DIMM ECC memory, and a quadro FX 250.
However the Quadros are unnecessary and just came with them.
They run Win XP x64 and I don't honestly know if that's the best solution but it works well for how I use them.
I have since raised them off the floor on to a fashionable piece of IKEA furniture.

I use an old Dell Dimension 8400 for a file server/HTPC. It runs a P4 3.4ghz, 2GB of DDR, some 500GB drives, and a GeForce 7900.

I used to love XP64.. was my fav OS till W7 came along smile.gif
It shares the same kernel as Windows Server 2003 x64 - hence why it is so much more stable, quick etc than XP32 wink.gif it was really a totally different & far better animal than XP32 thumb.gif

You may want to get a linux distro and make a small cloud, just submit a queue of work to it, and then the cluster's master node will divy up the work and cut through it all. Windows doesn't have a real "cluster", only a failover cluster.

Could the quadros be used to do some media decoding?

I don't have much experience with Linux. How would this work with all the Windows based software that each machine requires to produce renders? Primarily 3DStudio.

I've thought about this as well as folding at home. They do occasionally have some down time. I'll have to look into that more.

The 250s are pretty light weight. I use the 290s at work and they're OK for graphic and multi-desktop display. But they lack stream processors for heavy CUDA work.

http://helmer.sfe.se/

He's using different render software however, but the concept is there

He was using this queuing software

http://www.drqueue.org/cwebsite/

Also, at a minimum, I would change OS. XP was never a good multi core OS, was optmized for 2 cores. Server 2008 or Win 7 would be a better choice. Linux would be best, why have a gui when they are headless anyway, just wasting CPU time that could be used for rendering.
I've read through that Helmer post before and it is intriguing.

I know that many 3D artists utilize linux instead of a windows OS which is why I said I'm not sure that using XP 64 is the best method. I guess compatibility has always been the biggest question mark in my mind.

I just got my new web server box up and running:

Athlon X4 B40
4 GB G.Skill
M4A78LT M-LE
500 GB Samsung
OCZ SZ 550 W
CoolIt Eco with 2x Scythe Slipstreams on a Kaze-Q
9800 GTX+ 512 MB
Fractal Design Core 1000

- Installed Windows 8 Dev Preview
- The 9800 GTX+ is folding 24/7
- Installed VirtualBox and Ubuntu 11.10
- Installed Apache2, and learning about all the other wonderful web services I can host for myself

I have a Maximus III Gene coming my way and looking for an i7-870 or 875k to put in it to replace the Athlon.
