it doesn't matter how complicated your passwords are if you send them in clear text. Hence the whole reason I raised that point to begin with rolleyes.gif

Im trying to become more familiar with servers/server software, so I picked this up to play with. Its a HP Proliant 4U(?) rack mount with 4X1.4ghz Xeon w/HT for 8 'CPUs". It has 4gigs of DDR, registered/ecc not buffered I think is what the guy told me. Redundant 800watt max PSUs. 4 36gig SCSI 10k drives in RAID 5. Paid $50.

It currently has no purpose other than looking cool(thinking of ideas other than just cloud/data storage). I dont know how easy it is to take apart entirely but Ill probably do so for fun and while I figure out its main purpose. Currently it has CentOS on it, I am a student so I might put Server 2003 on it(no dvd drive). Other than that Ill probably fold with it as well.

Its also obviously loud as hell but once its up its probably no louder than any thermaltake products Ive had in the past, even so Im going to move it to my closet behind some stuff thumb.gif

Pics!

10 characters is long...?

Try going minimum 20 characters with at least 2 upper, 2 lower, 2 number, 2 symbol in there. That is the standard my work makes me have as an administrator. Just saying, even with that, use encryption for everything. Even if it's a self signed cert you made, it's better in the long run.

This is what I use for all my systems...

Figured I'd contribute to this smile.gif

1.jpg

(From top to bottom)

-somewhat visible chatsworth products logo (45U 2 post open frame rack)
-trendnet 16 port patch panel (1U)
-belkin cable management (2U)
-netgear fsv318 vpn
-cisco 16 port switch

On the patch panel, #9 is patched in for the switch and the rest of my network, #10 is our production webserver, #1 is for Fax/Telephone

2.jpg

As you can see, a Samsung Syncmaster monitor, 2 APC UPS, one much older than the other, nonetheless, an APC UPS biggrin.gif

Descending, there's a 4U server running Windows Server 2008 R2 with AD DC for our Exchange server

Next, you see 2 towers, the one on the left is the server, the one on the right is my desktop. Both are being held up by a decommissioned 2U rackmount chassis. The server is running Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter and has Debian x64 running on top of that, which is our websevrer (Lighttpd). It also runs our Exchange server, and is a writable domain controller in our AD. Pretty advanced for a home network, but I enjoy it smile.gif

Messy cabling, I know. I'll work on that later biggrin.gif

I'm using this as my picture too because I'm using the same Dell case.

Case:Dell
CPU:Intel Core 2 Duo e(something)
Motherboard:Dell
Cooling:Dell
Memory: 3.5GB, maybe 4, I haven't looked at it since December
PSU: Dell
OS HDD: 80gb WD 7200rpm
Storage HDD: 500GB Seagate and 1.5TB WD Green
Server Manufacturer: Dell and myself
Network connection: 1Gbps to gigabit switch
What you use it for: Backups and movie storage

Currently got two servers at work that im mucking about with.

Proliant G3 DL380, 3.2ghz x2, 4GB ram and 3x36GB hdd in raid 5 (Server not in use)

Dell Poweredge 2850 3.2ghz x2, 4GB ram and 3x36GB raid 5, 2x36GB Raid 1 and a 73GB. this server is running ESXI 4.1 for mucking about on. sounds like a very loud vacuum cleaner and ive removed a load of the fans too! removed 3 of them and it still runs within acceptable temperatures though it does like to complain a bit and the fans run at 11k RPM

512

ESXI whining that i had removed fans and only had one power cable in
