Yep, all of my drives are pooled into each other. As far as redundancy, I don't have a whole lot. I can turn on duplication for the files that I don't want to loose. It will then put the files on 2 drives. I do this on photos, and documents, but not my media. If I loose a drive I just loose whats on that drive. The rest of the pool is not affected. My media collection expands quite rapidly, so I just could not see the benefit to cost in going with a hardware raid 5 or 6. This way If I loose a drive, it's not the end of the world. It wont take me that long to get 1 or 2tb of data back if a drive dies. Maybe some day if I decide I want to spend the money I will get a nice card and go raid 6. Right now I just can't convince my self to go that route.

Are you absolutely sure you'd only loose the data on that disk? Though I've had no experience of the software RAID you're running specifically - the general rule is that if a HDD dies and you have no (spare) redundancy disks in that storage pool, then the whole pool dies.

However even if you are right, if you don't care if you loose a few TB of data from hardware failure, then a lot of that data can just be deleted anyway and thus you could afford to have proper redundancy. So why not do that?

I appreciate this system might work for you, but I'd be waking up in cold sweats if I dared run that kind of set up at home. laugher.gif The whole uncertainty of the resilience of the system - not to mention guess work as to where the data is stored - scares me. But then if it works for you, then so be it smile.gif

Yep I am absolutely sure. I even tested it before I set it all up. Everything is stored in ntfs and u can pull a drive and the pool is still good. I do have enough space right now that I could duplicate everything. To be honest it's just media. All of my important files are duplicated, and backed up in the cloud. I have a decent internet conection at home, I can download a lot of stuff quickly biggrin.gif. I have a list of all my media, so I can get it quick if I need too. Right now every drive is a little less than half full. So at most I loose 900gb, the least I can loose is like 400gb. Not saying this is the ideal situation, but it works for me right now. If I loose some tv shows or movies its not going to kill me.

The nice thing about a decent RAID5 is that you're not actually duplicating everything. You're creating repair information via checksums and so forth. On my system for example, I have 6 drives with 2 disks redundancy (ie 2 disks can die and I don't lose any data) and I only loose 1/3 of the storage to account for that - not half the storage (though I'm running ZFS raidz1, not RAID5 - but the principle is similar)

Good to hear that you've checked your pools resilience already though. That would have been my biggest worry smile.gif

And finally, with all my opinions said and done, it does sound like you've found a good alternative to RAIDing - even if it's not my personal preference. Diversity and variety in the different available solutions is (in my opinion at least) one of the great things about working in IT. I love reading how other people have approached the problems from a completely different angle. so thanks for taking the time to explain your set up smile.gif

Oh don't get me wrong, I would love to go raid 5. Actually I would probably go raid 6. The main reason I haven't is because I kind of have a hodge podge of disks and wanted to use the stuff that I already had. Heck, I just built a 12 disk raid 6 array with 2tb drives at work. I would love to have that setup at my house. Just don't have that kind of spare money sitting around right now. I love reading about everyone solutions to problems too. Also being in IT i like learning and reading what other people do. The more you learn right. On a side note, I do have a raid 5 array with 500gb drives in an older server. It houses all the things I can't loose.

I have just got most of my components in. Its a Xeon 1230, 3.2Ghz, Intel barebones, chassis, psu, board, and a raid module. I have to get some ram and then buy some drives down the road. I am really excited to get it going.

ZFS might be a solution for you then - as you could still use your random mix of disks and have them raided. (I nearly did this myself). However it would mean you cannot run Windows on your server. Not sure if that's a deal breaker for you or not smile.gif

Finally getting around to posting some pictures, not the greatest though. smile.gif

Home ESXI server I built from free/near free parts. See system in Sig.

OS: ESXI 5
Case: NZXT Whisper
CPU: 2x Intel XEON L5320 (quad-core) BSEL Modded to 2.33ghz
Motherboard: Intel S5000PSL
Memory: 20gb ddr-2 667 FBDIMM's (the picture was before an upgrade to the memory)
Cooling: Dual Coolermaster Hyper 101's on the CPU's with Thermaltake LGA771 brackets. 6 total 120mm fans, several others for FBDIMMS and positive airflow out the rear.
PSU: 550w Diablotek PSU (cheap but works great)
OS HDD: 4gb USB flash drive
Storage HDD(s): 8x 250GB WD RE drives with one spare. 750gb WD as a backup drive.
Server Manufacturer: (Ex: Dell, HP, You?) Me.

What you use it for:
(Minecraft server, web server, file server, media server, test environment for certifications, etc.)

Temps, loudness, etc.
Extremely quiet. Haven't gotten the temps out yet.

Just redid things a bit. I am using one of my 1tb seagate 7200rpm drives for whs 2011 in a vm. It makes backing up pc's pretty easy. I also added a wd 3tb green drive. I now have a total of 15.4tb of formatted storage. I also redid some of my cable management.
