Drive temp is a SMART function, but backplane temperature is what I was referring to. I would like to go with SAS...full duplex. WD got rid of their TLER tool because people were buying regular drives, using this tool, and using the drives with RAID cards instead of buying into their enterprise drive scheme. I'm confident that there is nothing different about the drives that make them last longer. If you pay more for a drive, you get a better warranty. It's not that they are backing the product more for free. You pay for it.

I'll be upgrading my 52TB server soon with faster parts and more bandwidth for parity syncs. Currently getting about 65MB/s during them, and this should allow me to get about 105MB/s, with the drives being the limiting factor.
http://www.overclock.net/t/987494/52tb-unraid-server/0_50

Going to be grabbing these:
Motherboard:

Processor:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115065

RAM:

SAS Card (x3):

http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10254&cs_id=1025406&p_id=8186&seq=1&format=2

6 SAS cables. 24 drives FTW.

You might want to check your choice of RAM. Will it even work? I'd just get ECC and call it a day. It's only 4 GB you're getting. It will only add ~$20 to the build, and peace of mind that your parity is being calculated correctly.

Yeah I don't believe that ram will work. The details of the newegg page state:
Supports up to 32 GB DDR3 ECC Registered memory (RDIMM) in 6 DIMM sockets Supports up to 16 GB DDR3 ECC Un-Buffered memory (UDIMM) in 4 DIMM sockets

And according to the user manual page 2-10 & 2-11:
Code:
Platform DIMM Type Intel® Xeon® Series Processors X8SIA/X8SIA-F

Non-ECC UDIMM Only Not Supported
ECC UDIMM Only Supported (see Table 1)
RDIMM Only (with ECC) Supported (see Table 2)
Mixed ECC with non-ECC Not Supported
Mixed UDIMM/RDIMM Not Supported

It will work that's only for xeon processors. I have a supermicro board currently that says the same thing and I have non-ecc ram in it. The board only supports ECC ram with a xeon processor from what I read too, which is much more expensive than a i3.

It's says "Supports up to 16 GB DDR3 ECC Un-Buffered memory (UDIMM) in 4 DIMM sockets". That's exactly what non-ecc RAM is unless i'm mistaken. tongue.gif

I see 8GB. 8GB (2 x 4GB)

Actually there is a difference between ECC un-buffered ram and non-ecc ram. Here is an article that shows the difference between the U and R counterparts of ECC http://www.servethehome.com/unbuffered-registered-ecc-memory-difference-ecc-udimms-rdimms/

I could see how using non-ecc ram may be supported as the memory controller is on the processor itself. I would be a little weary myself though.

Gotcha! Normally if the drive temps are ok the backplanes should be ok as well... but i get what you were refering to. that sure was crap that WD removed the ability to alter TLER which made me switch over to Hitachi drives, now they aquired Hitachi. My first setup was 8x1TB WD Fals drives and when i had to rma one drive, it was locked out of the tool. For home servers consumer grade drives work well for our setups.

I could see how using non-ecc ram may be supported as the memory controller is on the processor itself. I would be a little weary myself though.

You are right. To use an i3 on that board I need ECC Unbuffered.

Thanks for the catch, I will switch my RAM. thumb.gif
