Here's what I'm running:

CPU: AMD Phenom II X6 1055T (6 cores @ 2.8 GHz)
RAM: 8 GB DDR2 ECC
STORAGE: PERC 6i - 8 TB RAID 6 (6 TB usable)
OS DRIVE: WD 500 GB
VHD DRIVE: WD Veliciraptor 150 GB
OS: Windows Server 2008 R2 (Hyper-V) with several virtual machines.

Purpose: Storage, streaming, downloading (SABnzbd/SickBeard, uTorrent), hosting (IIS/Apache), development lab.

I'm trying to figure out some other uses since it's quite a bit powerful and I also have a business internet connection (with five static ip addresses) plus a decent upload.

^^^ thats a bit powerful for a home server. You could run a private game/vent server.

By development lab do you mean running virtual machines for testing or do you mean a SVN server? Also have you thought about using ESXi to run all the systems in virtual machines?

FTP, HTTP, the occasional GMod or CSS server, some folding (for what it's worth), and seedbox.

OS: FreeNAS
CPU: Intel Pentium D 820
Motherboard: P5WD2 Premium ICH8R
Cooling: Stock
Memory: 4Gb
PSU: ummmm, a noisy one
OS HDD: 80Gb SATA
Storage HDD: 500Gb RAID1 / SATA (redundancy is the most important thing for us)

What you use it for: (In no particular order) Laser print server, backups from ALL the work PCs, backups of itself (:s), VPN (oh yes, a mighty 100kb/s up speed), NAS,

Temps, loudness, etc: Honestly got no idea about the first, it's very quiet though.

I admit it's not the fastest server in the world (or as fast as we need), but it gets the job done. I can recommend FreeNAS to anyone.

I don't even know how to use or employ a server

I'm running an HP MediaSmart EX490.

I've swapped the original processor from a Celeron 420 to a Pentium Dual-Core E2140 pulled from a system that was upgraded. I have the original Seagate 7200.10 1TB drive in it, plus three Seagate 7200.11 1.5TB drives. I have a Hitachi 2TB in a Thermaltake external enclosure hooked up via eSATA to serve as a backup drive.

I'm using an APC BackUPS ES 750 for protection, with the GridJunction add-on installed for Windows Home Server, and WHSClamAV for Antivirus. I'm very happy with the box, it's a slick little setup, and due to HP's extra work, it supports Mac too in case I need to do backup work for a friend or colleague.

P.S. Nice Server, MCBrown. I look over a fair amount of Dell server equipment at work as well, though my organization is probably smaller than yours. I've virtualized all but two of our Active Directory servers using VMWare ESX.
