My file server can beat every other one posted here.

HP Dx5150 Microtower.

AMD Athlon64 1.99Ghz Single Core CPU
2GB DDR2?
160GB 7200 RPM SATA
320GB 5400 RPM IDE
80GB 2.5 Inch SATA

Running Windows Server 2008 R2 64 Bit with no problems at all...


Currently running as Torrent Server, Media Streaming Server, NTFS/SMB ( NFS from memory?) shares

80GB Laptop drive is boot
160GB Sata is my local PC backup drive from Acronis Image
320GB IDE is Movies, Music Etc.


Used to have a awesome Wireless network at home and gigabit switches, moved to Sydney its running a 100MB connection to a shotty Telstra ADSL Thomson modem / router with the worst 802.11 specs ive ever seen.


Currently trying to fund a new box and wireless network.

I3 2120T Low Power, 4GB DDR3, Intel Server Board, SSD Boot Drive, and 4+ 1TB drives.

LinkSys or Cisco dual band / 450MBPS + Wireless....

Ok, so my dad got this 'workstation' server from his work ~6 years go. He didnt need it so he gave it to me. I had it running as a one k folding rig for awhile but then the psu died. So my plans are now to upgrade it and convert it in to a home server. Current config:

CPU: Intel Pentium 4 2.8GHz
Motherboard: Dell atx socket 775 3xSATA v1, 1xIde, jbod, raid 0, 1, 5, 10
Ram: 2x256mb ddr (atleast one stick is failing)
Storage: none at the moment
Case: Dell
PSU: Dell 250watt, dead.
OS: -

Planned config:

CPU: Intel Pentium D 3.4GHz ($20, ebay)
Motherboard: Dell atx socket 775 3xSATA v1, 1xIde, jbod, raid 0, 1, 5, 10
Ram: 1x512mb ($10, newegg)
Storage: 1x Seagate Barracuda 1tb (alreay owned as an external, just need to bust the casing) 1x western digital se 250gb (owned) 1x samsung 250gb, (owned)
Case: Dell
PSU: Seasonic 300watt ($40, newegg)
OS: most likley debian, may also consider centos, freebsd and openbsd. (feel free to suggets anything) In debian im thinking of debian/kfreebsd just for kicks

So what do you guys think of the home server upgrade? Waist of time or good idea? I had a couple of drive around i thought, why not create a home server so i can back them up easyley and stream them to different computers all around my house with out taking any thing from my current rig? Everything would cost $70. The one thing im unsure about is the cpu. Would a p4 be enough? Or is a pd worth $20?

My old dev server got pwned by a power surge last week, so it gave me an excuse to upgrade!

I rely heavily on having a dev environment at hand not only to test new products (Server 2012 etc...) but also packages and deployments using SCCM so I require a fair bit of room to be able to run multiple machines to build a realistic environment.

So my new DEV Box is as follows!

CPU: Intel Xeon 1230 V2
Mobo: Gigabyte Z68P-DS3
RAM: 4x8gb G.Skill ARES 1600mhz (32gb total)
HDD:2x2tb in RAID1
OS: vSphere (ESX) 5.0

I only built it today, but I've built my domain, just implementing my SQL server now and then hopefully my SCCM 2007 server before I goto bed.

I'll be migrating the machines off of the raid 1 array and onto my SUN when it's built, then replacing the two 2tb drives with two SSDs for vSphere to run on it's own.

Gah, photobucket is hating me so I can't get a screenie up, I'll make another post later of the vSpher interface if anyone's interested..

Just a cheap NAS for my blu-rays and TV series. Serving to 2 clients at a time, max.

When the drives are idling they sit at ambient temperature pretty much.



They load at 30, with some very low speed 120mm fans pushing air over them.

Got a simple home server.

AMD Fusion E-350 [2x 1,8ghz] 4GB DDR3 1333mhz.

500GB OS, 2TB storage and 640GB Back-up.

Its slow but does eveything i need.
-Feeds 2 media players.
-Backs up 3 computers
-Plays a radio 24/7 so i can listen me tunes everywhere in the world.
-runs a 24/7 download hub [dc++]
-Passive cooling
-VNC
-Pulling just about 15 to 20Watts doing what it does. [max load at around 35 to 40watts ]

Using this board, one of the best for a fusion E-350 in a home server if you ask me.

Bit low on the SATA ports but got room to expand

Ahh the good ol' lack rack

It's ok, but the legs aren't the right width apart anymore, so you need to move them out by 14mm which is hard to do with the materials it's made of, lol.

if i ever reach the point of needing that many drives in a single case my first choice.....my dream chasis!
