Last time I looked into it, it looked like ZFS + encryption + open-source = non-existent. If you are willing to live without open-source, Solaris 11 express has encryption and is free.
Captain obvious warning: choose carefully, once you do the zfs upgrade to your pool these days it's like getting married to a branch. biggrin.gif
Yeah, this is why I stuck with FreeBSD.

I was tempted to go with pure Solaris, but IIRC the licences doesn't cover home servers as that's considered production use (or something).

To my mind, "home use" and "production" are mutually exclusive. thumb.gif

Yes you are correct. Iraq. and Yes, I have some interesting maintenance stories. I tried to suppress them though. biggrin.gif

Please see the post below. This video wasn't from me ( I was in the Marines), but it's the same stuff over there. Moon Dust.

Someone ought to introduce you to a desert based server room. There's literally no point in air compressor cleaning it, because it will all settle back down on the equipment in less than 15 minutes.

This +1000. Using an air compressor over there more than once a week would be the equivalent of trying to shovel snow in a blizzard.

What type of containers are those servers held in wtomlinson? Were the retrofitted/ghetto rigged pelican cases or purpose build for rack-mount hardware?

Are you talking about the Proliants in the green cases? We got those like that, so I assume they were retrofitted at some point (probably by a government contractor like General Dynamics). They had lids to go to the front and back. 98% of our IT equipment was COTS (commercial off the shelf) gear, so it pretty much has to be forced into cases like those. So in essence, it was built for the stuff, but sort of ghetto rigged, if you want to look at it that way.

Yeah just looking at what you guys did to make em portable like that. Looking at cheap way to move servers around to different locations in a portable case.

Isn't that just because you are using server rails ?

Yeah it fits perfectly if you just put some screws in the front of it, but I wouldn't. The legs are hollow.
