1.2 PB (yes, petabyte) hard drives in 4 to 5 years - Page 11

you gotta think about it. These things will probably have multi-head technology, be able to read from 2, 3, 4 etc points on the disk at once. Theyll effectively be raids within themselves

*sighs* People keep looking at this from "today's" point of view. As if we are going to be running this 1.2 PT hd on a C2D with 2 gigs of ram.

It'd be like trying to drop a 750 gig drive into my old P2 400mhz, 368 meg ram, and scsi ultra II box with a 36 gig HD. Unlikely to ever happen.

Not only is HD tech going to advance in 4-5 years, but so is processor, ram, and connections. Hell, we are currently sitting on a vast bulk of 65nm procs. Currently coming out are 45nm procs. Yet already IBM and their little party have started talking about 32nm procs.
In one year.
Overclockers are getting their CPUs up to 4.0ghz on "in home" cooling systems, 5.0 with exotic. As well, the manufacturers are getting over 3.0 ghz on their chips from the factory....so far.
In one year, I will NOT be surprised if Intel offers a 3.8 or 4.0 ghz proc based on socket 1336.
In two years we are expecting MORE than 4 core processors.
In two years I am willing to bet that the vast bulk of programs will be programmed entirely as multi-threaded and 64bit; rather than the "hashed" together multi-threading and 64 bit "support".
Hell, in 4 or 5 years, if we are still using "bits", our comps may be switching to 128bit vs 64.

Yet people post about how long it is going to take to format a 1.2 PT hard-drive?

it seems like alot now.. but by then.. youll be seeing terabyte sized programs.. kinda like right now. we have terabyte drives and most big programs take up more than 1gb of space or more.

we used to think GIGABYTE drives were outrageous O.o
