How to: Install Ubuntu 10.04 with an ATI 5xxx series card.

I know there is already a ATI for linux thread, but the 5xxx series is a special case because it won't work with the liveCD. Thankfully, it's a very simple fix.

THE PROBLEM
With the release of catalyst 10.4 drivers for Linux, we finally have support for the latest graphics cards; however, if you've tried to boot the liveCD with a ATI 5xxx series card, the purple ubuntu load screen will load and then your screen will go black.

THE FIX

If you're using the liveCD (I did not, so this may not be true), press F4 and choose safe graphics mode.

This will force the vesa drivers to load.

If you're used unetbootin to make a liveUSB, the boot loader screen looks similar to this:

What you want to do is press [Tab] to edit options.

This will give you a whole bunch of kernel parameters that we're not concerned with. Leave everything alone EXCEPT you need to add
Code:
 --xforcevesa
to the end of it. There should already be the "--" part so just add "xforcevesa".

Both of these option will get you booted up. Now install like normal, reboot, and THEN install the fglrx driver. Reboot again, and you're good to go!

Enjoy!

when I was trying to do my setup, nothing would work even using --xforcevesa, unless I used my DVI port instead of HDMI, but when I moved to DVI (used a DVI->HDMI converter that game w/ my monitor) I didn't need to add any bootflags like -xforcevesa or nomodeset etc, it worked flawlessly the first time. not saying this is how it is in every case, just sharing my experience.

Oh really? When you used --xforcevesa did you get the black screen after the purple Ubuntu loader using HDMI?

I was using HDMI and that worked.

I was having this same problem when I installed Ubuntu on Thursday. You're four days too late, ;-;

Hopefully this will save others from the hours of crawling through info I had to do, +rep

So the ATI 5xxx series cards have complete driver parity with Windows now? Or is this just limited functionality we're talking about here?

I'm not sure what you mean.

The liveCD just doesn't like to show the picture on the ATI 5xxx series cards (at least in my experience)

I don't know if this applies to Kubuntu, but if it does, I'd like to note that my install worked without any problems.

Would this be counted as a necro bump?

Anyways, I found, that on the Kubuntu 10.04 live cd, you have to press f6, then esc, to access the kernel parameters thing you were talking about, to type in the xforcevesa command.
There was no safe graphics mode on the f4 menu

How tos can't really be necro bumped because of their nature.

Also, thanks!
