My First Build, Need Advice VERY badly!

Thread Starter
So I'm a very big newb when it comes to computer building, and a friend of mine is offering to help me build it, provided I know what is needed and isn't needed to make a great new build. So he turned me onto this website and told me to try and learn as much as possible from it and then generate your own build and try posting it on here to get feedback from knowledgeable people.

So here's my proposed build:

Case: Ultra m998 ULT40069 Mid-Tower ATX Case

Power Supply: Ultra X4 750-Watt Modular Power Supply

MOBO: ASUS P6T Motherboard - LGA 1366

CPU: Intel Core i7 950 Processor BX80601950

Video Card: XFX HD-587A-ZND9 Radeon HD 5870 XXX Edition Video Card

Sound Card: Creative Labs 70SB104000000 Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio Sound Card

RAM: Corsair Core i7 Dominator 6GB PC12800 DDR3 RAM

OS: Windows 7 Home Edition

CPU Cooler: Ultra ChillTec Silver CPU Cooler

Hard Drive: Western Digital WD15EARS Caviar Green Hard Drive

So that's what I've got so far. Any and all advice is greatly appreciated.

Don't go with the i7 950. That is a waste of money. Just go for the i7 920 D0. You can overclock it to ~4Ghz.

Make sure that Windows 7 is 64-bit as well.

As for CPU cooler, just go with the Venomous-X.

I would change that hard drive from green to the black version. As Z Naught said go with the 920. Also go with 64bit windows 7 Home Premium.

I would also go with a different CPU cooler. Either the magahelm (can't remember its name, something like that).

I am not sure about that PSU either. I have heard some mixed things about Ultra.

EDIT: There are also cheaper motherboards than the ASUS P6T that include USB 3 and SATA 6.

Also, since you both recommended the i7 920 instead of the 950 because of the large price difference, do you think it would be beneficial to go with the 930 since it's really not much more expensive than the 920?

Thanks again all of you. Keep the advice coming! I could use any and all of it.

if you do plan to overclock go with the i7 930 if price difference is small else purchase the i7 920

i dont like the powersupply honestly . purchase a seasonic or corsair .

why windows 7 home edition? why not windows 7 ultimate ?

for heatsink buy a coolermaster hyper 212 heatsink if you limited on what you can spend for this

hard drive as others say if you want performance go with a cavier black not a green drive.

hugs

Jen

Yea my friend did mention that I would probably miss the backwards compatibility to Windows XP that the Windows 7 Home Edition didn't offer.

This may be a really stupid question, but what's the difference between the cavier green and black drives?

Thank you for the insight with regards to everything!

Short answer... The black performs better.

EDIT: Also, in regards to the PSU, I would suggest the PSU that I have. I got it cheaper than that ultra X4 you're looking at and the one I have is 80 plus silver certified as well as 100% modular.

Well. Ideally I would Like to get this entire build within 1.7k. Though I could see myself going a bit past that potentially up to 2k.

Thanks for the help with the HD. It seems like that is the general consensus among all of y'all so I certainly can't go wrong with that. Also, thanks for the link to that PSU that you have darklink. Again, this is probably a foolish question, but from what I gather a modular PSU is more neat and efficient in keeping the PC cool. If that is true, is your PSU a modular one?
