I'm not convinced that you;re bright enough to recognize it though...

But really, you should just admit you're wrong and move on. You're just digging yourself into a hole at this point - stop pretending you have a clue what you're talking about.

The problem with TF2 comp, and I think the only legitimate complaint you could make here (and of course nobody has actually made it...) is that the TF2 comp scene is tiny and hard to find. You really need to go looking for it - there are only like 2-3 public servers that have a very high level of play, and the number of people playing cevo and twl is really small compared to CS.

I mean, I've played ammomod with Reptile (that didn't go so well) and I've scrimmed against Carnage (I was maining scout at the time, that didn't go so well either.... ). I see huge name players around pretty frequently. That sort of thing just doesn't happen in CS. On the one hand it's kind of cool seeing people around and being like "Hey I just watched your video!" or finding silly ways to harass them, but on the other hand it's just a really really tiny community.

There are some pretty good pubstars around (and I don't mean to use the term derogatorily here, there really are some pretty good people who only play in pubs), but for the most part the majority of pubs are just a massive spamfest (and they play maps that encourage just going demo/soldier and spamming like crazy). It's hard to blame people for saying "TF2 is a spammy game made for noobs", because that's probably their experience with it. Of course we all know that if you're playing on the right servers with the right people that couldn't be further from the truth, but you need to go looking for it and it can be hard to find.

On the other hand a game like CS is just inherently competitive, and even on the noobiest servers people are doing their best to get a good KDR. In TF2 there is more room for doing silly things and messing around because it's not as clear-cut as to how well a person is doing. All you see is their points, not their KDR, and you don't need to sit around for 2 minutes after you die so trying crazy stuff isn't such a problem.

I agree so much with the OP. I wanted so much to like this game because my clan at the time was getting big into it, but for the life of me I cannot wrap my head around what is so great about repeatedly running to your death over and over and over and.. well, you get the point.

It's not that I was even half bad at it, I did begin to get positive k/d ratios all the time but I simply could not stick with it. I never even bothered to reinstall when I went to Windows 7. Man I wish I could give away all my Steam games I own but I don't even have installed any more.

EDIT: Just noticed the flame war going on here. I'm not in on that.

You need to be more careful and aware, you probably were over-committing yourself and getting into sticky situations where there's no way to retreat. A lot of people have this problem with CS too. It's almost always better to do less damage but stay alive longer.

"running to your death over and over and over" doesn't sound like very much fun to me, either.

Now a days when I go to load up TF2 I can barely play for 20-30 minutes without getting bored to tears of how casual friendly/easy it feels to me, it seems like a game I could see people having a good time playing on the Xbox or PS3 but not on the PC. It just doesn't feel like a "core" FPS to me. Does anyone else feel the same way?
I actually somewhat agree to this, unlike many posters here . Although I do love TF2 and have spent a lot of fun time playing it, I can see where the OP is coming from. I play FPS games a lot, and TF2 is one of those games where you can pretty much just jump into for the first time and be good at it, considering you play other shooting games. In comparison to games like Call of Duty, TF2 is pretty much mindless shooting. There is very little strategy involved unless you're the last one alive and you're trying to flank the enemy team or something.

Is it overrated? Well no, that's where I disagree with you. It is rated by the community that plays it, and if 98% of the entire community of FPS players likes TF2, then it's rated perfectly fine. It's a popular game and has a lot to offer. It's also one of the limited number of games I've bought for the PC.

I think you got those two games mixed up there. TF2 actually has a chance to be strategic, I've seen it before, you just need cooperative players and a mic for each of them. CoD by nature, on the other hand (especially MW1/MW2) is hectic, reaction-based mindless shooting.

But TF2 could obviously swing either way, and in pubs, there is a greater chance of everything just being organized chaos.

I'm sure you didn't read the whole thread (can't blame you ). Basically, that's an accurate description of most pubs. If you go looking for a higher level of play though (pugs, comp leagues, good pubs), you will find an incredibly deep and strategic game.

I imagine most of your TF2 experience has been on 24/7 dustbowl/goldrush, probably 24+ man servers, short respawns. Therein lies the problem, and I think that's the root of most people's problems with the game.

Yea it really depends on which servers you play in. I notice some severs just have higher quality players and it does require teams to really use teamwork and strategy to win. I pub by myself most the time because of school/work and I have a few servers saved that are vanilla settings that have good quality players and I try to say away from those instant spawn servers and other mods, it just gets so watered downed and turns into a death match.

TF2 I have played since release. There are times where I get bored of it and drop it for a few months to play other games, but I always come back to it. (Like BF2 for example, played it for a month, got bored and back to TF2) It is really fun to me but only when you're playing in good servers. I don't agree with Tipsycoma, I think it takes a long time to master classes. Sure anyone can pick the class and play it, but to really be great at it takes a lot of practice and skill.

No, you're not the only one. That's the problem Those 32-man insta-respawn goldrush servers are the most popular ones, but that's not how the game was meant to be played.
