Wow, for a topic that we have basically rehashed to death already, this thread sure took off in a big way pretty fast. I thought everyone knew all of these discussion points already...

Oh well. Add fuel to the fire, I guess...

1. Actual price of a PS3 is still undetermined. As has been noted, until Sony announces a price, all numbers are pure speculation. But speculation can be fun.

2. It will cost a relative fortune to manufacture because of the Blu-Ray drive. Even at $900, Sony could very well be losing money per unit sold. If an dedicated HD-DVD player is going to retail for $1200, there is no way a Blu-Ray player that also does a zillion other things will cost less. HD-DVD, as should be common knowledge by now, is the cheaper technology to implement.

3. Sony cannot release the PS3 at a price point that is not competitive with the X360. So $900 is out of the question, they would be better off just not releasing the thing. The maximum price that the consumer base will probably accept is $500, which is still high. Adjusted for inflation, historical console releases have generally been $400 or lower. And there is a strong possibility that Microsoft will cut the price of the X360 when the PS3 is released to steal some thunder. So the PS3 may have to come in at $450 or so to seem competitive.

4. So the ONLY issue for Sony to work out is balancing market penetration given the competition vs. loss per unit sold. Microsoft is pressuring them on the competitive front, and their weak cash position is pressuring them on the other front.

Not really related to the launch, but something I'm sure is on Sony's mind, are the numerous reports saying that developers are calling the X360 easy to program for and the PS3 a friggin' nightmare to program for. That does not bode well for the PS3 library down the road. This does factor into their pricing indirectly, since they have to forecast how much they will recoup from game sales down the stretch. If they were confident of having a huge library of must-have games, they might be more inclined to accept a heavier loss per unit at launch. I can't guess what they are thinking along those lines right now, but when John Carmack says that the X360 is the better platform for developers, Sony execs should be sweating a little IMHO.

Yeah this topic has allready been beat to a bloody pulp even before this thread started. It's definitely going to be between 400-500 in my opinion. We'll have to wait for Sony to anounce the exact price.

What does the Xbox have over the PS3? They are all about the same in terms of what they do, they play movies, music and games. What else could they all be besides Entertainment Systems.

Is it the fact that PS3 is offering HiDef standard with their package that makes it a home entertainment system?

And yeah it still matters just as much then as it does now. The NES didn't play Beta or what ever they used back in 1980's but it was still labeled as an entertainment system.

So what makes the PS3 stand differently than the other systems? The fact that it is offering BluRay makes it this kind of category?

Yeah and as for Vulcan said about the programming, it is going to jump prices and possibly limit titles, so its going to be an obstacle for sony to get around that, but I feel that alot of these programmers need to stop whining about the new processor units or what ever. I mean it might be somewhat unrelated but Epic was able to multi thread games, so its not impossible to use better code and what not, maybe if the gaming industry would stop its whining and get back into gear maybe we wont see so many mediocre liscenced titles. Dumb people keep buying them and they will keep on making them, so the cycle goes on and on. Its really a pity that really "good" games are so hard to come by and that consoles need "killer apps" to sell. Why cant all games have as much effort put into them and creativity, I think its because much of the industry has just become lazy.

The only thing that is going to set these 2 consoles apart is the Online play, because we all have our bias on ATI/nvidia and which looks better. Some said the PS2 looked better than the Xbox and vise versa, it's going to come back to that again.

As far as the usabilty factor, Sony needs to have a bangin' Online interface, and if it's Free or close to free to play Online (Like PCs) then they'll win overall. Of course servers are going to have to be paid by someone but I'm usre you all get the jist.

Where's the horse, I want to beat it some more

Anyways, point is its not being marketed as a console. Dont try to go on me about it, I dont know what Sony is thinking. All I know is Xbox 360 and Revolution will be marketed as consoles.

I think some of you are missing the whole idea behind selling a console with a new media format for less than what the retail players cost, Sony themselves did it with BOTH Playstations (the orginal Playstation was only thought up after Nintendo refused to use Sony's CD ROM technology on the N64) most of Playstation 2's initial sales in Japan were from people who never even played games on it! They just wanted a DVD player and PS2 was FAR cheaper than anything else at the time AND it was progressive scan and had 5.1 audio built right in (both relatively new/expensive technologies at the time) it was practically a steal to the Japanese then and I believe that with the right marketing the PS3 could be Sony's hat trick in the realm of using a console to successfully push a new media format.

Actually at Ps2's release most Japanese families already a dvd player. Keep in mind Japan is the undisputed most technologically advanced country in the world with things we wont see for another 4 or 5 years... But yeah the Playstation was a SNES add on.
