[Windows 7] Setting up the Unicore CPU client

Thread Starter

This guide will run through the steps required to install the Unicore Folding client.

There are only 2 reasons you should run this client:
• You are using a single core CPU
• You can only fold on your CPU for a few hours a day, and cannot complete an SMP WU in time.

Otherwise, use the SMP client.

If you are using a single core CPU, use the following instructions. If you wish to install the client on more than one CPU core, follow these steps, then move to post 2.

Single Unicore Client:

Files Needed:

1) Windows Unicore Client. The 1st client in the list, under "System tray client installer with viewer".
(Direct Link)

2) HFM.NET. Under "Featured Downloads".
(Direct Link)

Installation:

1) Run the installer.

2) Go to the install location of the client (C> Program Files (x86)> Folding@home) and open the Folding@home-x86 folder. You'll need to make a shortcut of the Folding@home.exe file. You can put it wherever you like, but I put it straight into the Startup Folder in the Start Menu:

3) Now, rightclick the shortcut and click "Properties". At the end of the "Target" field, you'll need to add a space and -local, like so:

4) Start the client, and you can now enter your information:
  • User name: [Your Folding Name]
  • Team number: 37726
  • Passkey: Leave blank, even if you have one

Pausing the client:

You can also pause the Unicore client, if necessary. To do this, rightclick the client, and choose pause work. The icon shoud change like this:

(You could also close the client and start it up again if you wish. The client will save the WU and continue when it starts.)

Multiple Unicore Clients:

Use this method when you have more than one core, but can't use the SMP client.

1) Go to the install location of the client; C> Program Files (x86)> Folding@home.

2) Copy and paste the "Folding@home-x86" folder, and rename to "Folding@home-x86 2":

3) Similar to step 2 in the first post, open Folding@home-x86 2, and make a copy of the Folding@home.exe file. Again, rightclick> Properties, and add the -local flag.

4) Now, when you first run the second client, you will need to enter your info again. Same as before, but before you press "Ok", go to the "Advanced" tab.

At the bottom, change the Machine ID to 3 (2 is the default for GPUs):

5) If you have more cores, follow the same method, changing the numbers as appropriate.

HFM.NET Guide:

1) Install HFM.NET.

2) Go to Client> Add client:

This image has been resized. Click this bar to view the full image. The original image dimensions are 1028x466 and 73KB in size.

Fill in the following information:

• Instance Name: [Your choice]
• Client Processor Mhz: [CPU speed in Mhz] This is not needed for the client. It only gives values for the PPD/Mhz column in HFM
• Log Folder: C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Folding@home\\Folding@home-x86\\

It should look similar to this:

If you have multiple clients, add another client in HFM, but change the Log Folder to the copied client folder.

3) To save the client information, you'll need to save a configuration file.
Click File> Save Configuration. Save it in the install location (just to keep it out of the way).

Go to Edit> Preferences> Startup tab> Check "Load Configuration File" and select the config file you just saved ("Startup" options are optional):

And you're finished.

I have the unicore set up on my in-laws computer.
They finish a WU ever few weeks, since they only leave it turned on when they use it, about 10 hrs a week.
Very simple to set up and run. I wish SMP was this easy.

No, leave it on. Basically, it causes the client to run in the install location, rather than in AppData> Roaming. Makes it easier for new folders, easier for HFM, and easier when setting up multiple clients.

If you know what you're doing though, go ahead and get rid of it; I don't bother with it anymore.
