Unlocking Pipes Worth it???

Thread Starter
Ive just bought my 6800 from a friend of mine and i have it OC'ed at 361/900. I can raise it higher with it still passing the test but in a game that i play called World Of Warcraft i get artifacts in the form of green patches all over the terrain. I read the guide to unlocking its pipes, but since i get these artifacts is it even worth unlocking since i cant raise it? or would unlocking it do something about those artifacts?

well if you get artifacts after unlocking the card even if its not overclocked then you should lock it back up and overclock the piss out of it, but umm 900 on the memory clock is really good, and that might be why you have artifacts, i suggest making the card 12/6 and if you still have artifacts make the card 12/5 and then overclock....but before you do that just try backing off the 900 memory to 800 and see what it does and if you still get artifacts then lock it and oc

I say you go for 16/6, and have the card at stock speeds. (350ish and 700ish), and if you don't get artifacts while you are unlocked, OC it s'more!
Your getting acrtifacts because yoru memory clock is too high, try lowering it to about 850ish, and see what happens.

K maybe i should start over, these X/XX numbers your giving me, i have NO clue what they mean . And im running the card at 370/942, locked with no artifacts right now. But the problem is when I turn up the core anymore it gets the artifacts. But my stuff seems stable at what im at right now, im just wondering about if i unlock the pipes will it change the fact that i get artifacts when i turn up the core more? or will it not help? I apologize for my lack of knowledge in this stuff .

16/6 = 16 pipelines form stock 12, and 6 pixel shaders form stock 5 i think it is....

reset it to stock speed, then unlock it to 16/6, then OC the speeds higher if you dont get artifacts. The stock speeds unlocked will be better than it overclocked without the extra pipes...

Are you sure about that? Stock speeds on a vanilla 6800 is usualy only around 325/700. I bet his card running at 12/5 at 370/942 will be better than 16/6 325/700. The last pipe quad doesn't increase performance nearly as much as the first 3. Try a benchmark at both settings, i'd be interested to see which scores higher.

Im thinking keeping it locked and that beastly overclock will beat the unlock at stock speeds, thats my guess, try it out and get back to us
