I would take an i7 over the AMD x6. Even in apps that use all 6 cores of the AMD, the i7 still beats it. Which is kind of sad if you think about it.

Depends, do you want to upgrade in the future with out buying a new motherboard? IF you think you might upgrade soon, am3 wouldn't be a bad choice, considering you could upgrade from a x6 to a bulldozer cpu without the need for a new motherboard. Otherwise, go i7.

According to gigabyte that board does support the x6, with your current psu and that board you could get the x6 and spend the money you would have spent on the new board and RAM and get a second 5770 for crossfire. That would give you better gaming performance and better performance in multi tasking and multi threaded apps. At that point the only benefit the i7 rig would give you would be superior speed clock for clock which has already been established is hardly noticeable in day to day usage. Plus you would be setting up an AM3 upgrade path
