Lets Play "Help the Noob"!!

Hi everyone... I have read as much as I can before asking any questions. I want to OC my computer (obviously) so this is what I have at the moment.

P4 2.53 ghz
Asus P4S800 board

Now its running stock. I went to my bios and when I went to the advanced tab, the FSB and the Multiplier were both greyed out. It said something like I would have to go to Jumper Free Mode? Not sure how to do this at all... I tried looking it up and other people seem to be stumped as well... I could, however, change the CPU speed.. it gve me two other options, a higher speed, and Manual. Which I guess will let me manually enter the speed....

Suggestions? I would like to get it up to 3ghz... is it possible? Any help is greatly appreciated.. I tried to learn all I can from jsut reading online.. but I kind of got overwhelmed...

Loved the subject title, brought me right to you. First fill out your system specs to give us some further insight. Have you heard ofa program called CPU-Z? If you don't already have it download it here. It will help us determine your CPU type, and therefore its overclockability lol. Do you have any aftermarket cooling? After you answer this I'll do my best to give you an estimate.

If you press enter while in BIOS after highlighting "manual" you can adjust your FSB speed with the plus and minus keys on the keypad...unless your RAm can handle running outside it's SPD (factory specified speed) then you will need to "underclock" your RAM-- for instance in those same BIOS menus, when you choose manual you can also choose RAM speed. If you are using DDR 400 set ti to DDR 320 so that when you start to push the FSB up you don't OC your RAM out of it's spec too far.

CPUZ ID will show you how fast your RAM is as well as a host of other details.

Why not post us a screenshot of that so we can guide you a littel better....

Open Cpu-z a couple times and save a screen shot of the main and memory tabs and post it here. It will tell us what you have to work with.

Go in the bios, and use the manual setting to beable to overclock from the bios.
Disable spread spectrum & thermal throtting, then up the fsb by 5mhz in tell it becomes unstable or won't boot to op, then reduce the fsb in tell it boots, keep an eye on the temps, keep them under 55c under load.
