Budget i7 - First Time Builder

Thread Starter

*It'll cost around 2k if purchased on newegg; I live near a microcenter so I can acquire most of the parts there for around 20% off + original discount, such as the i7 930 for $180, cm atcs 840 for $120, etc.

First time builder here, just seeking for suggestions/opinions - and I've also got several questions revolving around the motherboard and powersupply

  • Quoted from motherboard description page:
    Quote:
    2 x PCI Express x16 slots, running at x16 (PCIEX16_1/PCIEX16_2) (Note 1)
    2 x PCI Express x16 slot, running at x8 (PCIEX8_1/PCIEX8_2) (Note 2)

(Note 1) For optimum performance, if only one PCI Express graphics card is to be installed, be sure to install it in the PCIEX16_1 slot; if you are installing two PCI Express graphics cards, it is recommended that you install them in the PCIEX16_1 and PCIEX16_2 slots.

(Note 2) The PCIEX8_1 and PCIEX8_2 slots share bandwidth with the PCIEX16_1 and PCIEX16_2 slots espectively. When PCIEX8_1 is populated with an expansion card, the PCIEX16_1 slot will operate at up to x8 mode; when PCIEX8_2 is populated with an expansion card, the PC IEX16_2 slot will operate at up to x8 mode.
What does this mean? I'll be crossfiring the 2 5850s, so does it mean that if I add an additional soundcard, that one of my cards will run half of its speed?

  • Power Supply

Will it be sufficient enough for all my components? (I'll be doing some overclocking, should I get more headroom and go for a 900w~1000w?)

Also - Will it work? I've done researching the parts to the best of my ability, I just need some seasoned system builders to confirm so I can get the doubt off my shoulders

Thank you!

I would go with the i7 920 D0 if you plan to overclock. The 930 seems to be a worse overclocker. No reason to go with the Corsair Hydro, just get a Venemous-X or Megashadows. (Should be able to hit ~4Ghz on air).

As for the the PCI-e slots, if you put the sound card in the 1st PCI-e x8 slot, the bandwidth on your top card will be cut in half. However, considering this is PCI-e 2.0, it has double the bandwidth of 1.0 and thus you would be getting the same bandwidth as a regular PCI-e 1.0 x16 slot. This should not reduce your performance by a noticeable amount.

Your power supply will be fine. Corsair seems to be a good brand. (Never owned one myself)

Looks like a good build. But for the case if you wait 6 days or so, the HAF X will be coming out. Not sure if thats your type of case or not but I will be buying it. For the HD, I would recommend the Samsung Spinpoint F3 (500gb though), ill try to find the benchmark but its rated as the fastest mechanical drive.

Just curious though, how did you get the 20% coupon for MicroCenter. I'm gonna be building my i7 Rampage rig soon and that would help out.

EDIT* Found the benchmarks.

Thanks for the quick response!

Are there any motherboard that will prevent this? would this work?

Yeah, as for the case I've done a lot of lurking around, and it ended up between the haf 932 and the cm atcs 840. I really like 932's side window and good airflow, but having no dust filters is somewhat a deal breaker for me (even though someone recommended cutting up 300lb women stocking to use as dustfilter) - hopefully the haf x will have what I've been searching for

And for the 20% off, one of my friends works in microcenter - but I was also told that you can get discounts if you call the store personally (same way as people getting discounts on dell monitors when ordering via phone - just ask)

that looks like a nice build. I am doing a build for a client and they have chosen almost the same parts as with the mb,cpu,HDD,psu

Since the i7 920 is end of life, retailers like MicroCenter and Frys do not stock them anymore. If he were to buy from MicroCenter, he's getting a 930.

If he really wants a 920, he'd pay anywhere around $270-280 for it, vs. $200 for the 930 and I don't think that extra cost is worth it. The 930's will get to 4.0GHz. Some may not do it as efficiently as certain 920's, but it will still get the job done.

Also, the Corsair H50, Venomous-X and Megashadow are all pretty much equal to each other. Their performance is pretty close to one another, and I don't see a reason why he shouldn't get the H50. Its' biggest pro is the compact form factor, and if he's getting 20% off on it, that makes it a great deal!

Yes, the HAF X will have dust filters. The inside will also be painted black for better visual appeal.

The newer 920s arent much better overclockers either.

I would seriously change up the Ram. OCZ has a running track the size of a stadium when it comes to issues. I would recommend Gskill personally.
