6800gs SLI anyone?? - Page 3

If you want to wait for the next generation, you don't need 2 6800s . You only need 2 if you are a benchmark whore or want to play 1600x1200. My 6800GS (485/1100) in BF2 at 1280x1024, all high settings and 4x AA/16x AF forced in drivers = Avg: 59.817 - Min: 42 - Max: 88. Perfectly acceptable frames, I don't don't slow down at all (at least not with 2GB of RAM )

Sorry but it doesn't work like that. you get 1/2 your screen using a 256MB 6800 performance and the other half using 256MB 6800 performance. Not the whole at 512MB 6800 performance. Think of it like, 2 identical trucks. The top speed of each truck would not change reguardless if they were together or not. But when you get them pulling a load, 2 pull much better than one. They are the 6800's. Compared to a bigger and faster and more powerfull truck, the 7800. The 7800 would be able to pull the load faster but would strain more to do so.
A game which requires 512MB GPU power will struggle under 2x256MB. But a game requiring 256 GPU power purrs. Likewise the 512MB will run with the 7800 but would not be able to pump out the same FPS of the 2 6800's in a 256MB situation.
Hope that helps.

Im currently using a single 6800GS, but i must say that it is much noisier than a 6600GT. If you have 2, im sure the performance will be better if not equal to a 7800GTX 256/512, but will make a lot of noise.

EDIT: By the way, the Splinter Cell Chaos Theory comparison was carried out with Shader Model 1.1 and not 3.0. This will impact the effectiveness of SLi greatly.

Of course it's louder, the heatsink on the 6800GS is like twice as big, and the fan is bigger and I believe it spins faster than my 6600GT. But the cooler is much more effective. My 6600GT overheats after a while (well, until I got 2 extra case fans), and from what I've heard, the 6800GS stays pretty cool.

The 6800 GS believe it or not with enough cooling can over clock to 520MHz/1215MHz. And has just as many pipe lines(12 when un-blocked) as the 7800 GT so what is the point if they are the same with some more fans. send me some if you think that they are diiferent after OCing and unblocking.

Many cards can do that, it's actually an avg overclock even with stock. Mine can do that on stock, but i didn't want it hovering over 70C so i cranked it a bit. i've seen a gs go upto 544 and 1300 without any aftermarket cooling, which is huge. Also, a gs has 12pipes normally, you can only unlock an AGP vers to 16pipes.

Hmmm... where to begin.

1) That's not a very major overclock. Pinhead has his at I think 550/1500.
2) 12 is the default number of pipes. The AGP can be unlocked to 16.
3) The 7800GT has 20 pipelines, not 12.
