I've built many a rig with one of those cards, they have a pretty good set of optical in/out ports.

Good sound card, but digital output is pcm, NOT dolby digital. Don't buy this for a home theater PC and expect digital output like your dvd player.
So it wouldn't work with a digital input for a DVD...

My opinion u really dotn have to buy an extra soundcard since it just going to be for HTPC and will be hooked up on reciever, the reciever itself should be enough to decode all the audio format. i know the avr 1805 has the digital put and optical input just not sure with the 1705, if that has the digital input u can buy the dfi nf3 mobo since it has digital out.videocard wise with the All In Wonder cards from ati. so it can act as a tivo for her too. with ur budget u should consider socket 754 semprons. and spend the money on RAM and HTPC case.

Agreed, as long as your motherboard has optical or spdif out, you don't need a sound card. If its going in the living room, check out a small form factor case, like the Biostar iDeq. The motherboard is included. I've been wanting to build a system on one of those for a while, just for fun.

I have no idea. I just want true 5.1 surround going to the receiver. What do I need for that?

I'd suggest a slightly better sound card. I like my Catalina, but it does eliminate the possibility of using the front audio jacks. If she doesn't need it, I'd at least look at one of those cards that supports DDL, as it will allow her to get 5.1 from her music, too. Also, make sure the GPU has a component out or that her TV has DVI in.
