5-31-10 I have confirmed that the Core i3 series Intel GMA HD integrated graphics is not fully compatible with Ubuntu 10.04. It causes GPU hang errors, and X will crash. The machine will still be running and you can SSH into the machine, but your graphics will not respond and the machine/X must be rebooted. There is still no fix for this error and I was forced to buy an Nvidia GT 220 instead.
I just put together an Ubuntu based HTPC with the latest build of the OS. I installed Boxee to begin with and it kept freezing my system. I then installed XBMC and it does the same thing. Usually it was when trying to search for media, but XBMC just crashed while I had it sitting at the main screen and the screensaver for XBMC dimmed the screen. I cannot figure out what I am doing wrong. I am a total Linux noob so all help will be something new to me.
Specs are:
Gigabyte H55M-S2H
Core i3 540 3.06Ghz
2x1GB DDR3 1333 (Just tested 8 hours in MemTest - Pass)
Onboard video via HDMI to my TV
Onboard Optical out to my Yamaha receiver
Intel Pro 1000 PCI NIC
I am not sure if it's a software or a hardware compatibility issue.
