New Athlon 64 3700+ Sandy Questions

Thread Starter
Hello all, Nice site!

I have just ordered parts to build a new computer. This is my 10th. build first with the athlon 64.

Here are my parts:

Athlon 64 3700+ Sandy
A8N-Sli Premium
Zalman Cooler CNPS7000B-Cu LED
eVGA 7800GT
2x1024 OCZ Platinum 2T 2-3-2-5
Barracuda 160GB Sata2 3GB/s
Ultra Aluminus Case w/ 600w X-Finity PSU

I have have experience in overclocking but have never OC'ed a Athlon 64. I want a nice speed of 2.6GHz Is this doable with my set up and what all do I need to tweak? I have the same ram on my Athlon XP 3200 system and I was able to OC it to 2.5 GHz but I had to loosen the timmings on the ram to 3T 3-3-3-5 from stock. What should I set everything to too have a stable system. Mostly I am gammer, only other things I do on it is surf and homework for college, thats it.

Thanks and your info will be appreciated!

Nice ram. I just ordered the same set. Fastest stock 1 gb sticks on the market. Great mobo as well. Thats going to be a very solid system.2.6 with a san diego 3700+ on air is a piece of cake. I would have recommended the zalman 7700cu rather than the 7000 (I have one of each and the 7700 is about 4C cooler under load) but the 7000 is still a solid cooler. My second rig is a close match to yours. Good luck and welcome to overclock!

Thanks Robilar! I almost bought the Athlon 64 4000+ sandy but decided to make a scrifice to get a 7800GT, I kinda wish I would have just gotten the 4000 sandy and the 7800GT O well. I was looking at the bigger CPU cooler but was affraid of how big it was, I do regret getting the smaller one. I might just throw it on my NF7-S2G board if it will fit and then buy the better cooler.

I cant wait to try out this new system. My other rig is a Athlon XP 3200 on an Asus A7N8X-E-Deluxe with a 6600GT card. The best score I could get on 3d Mark 03 was around 9800 marks. I hope this pc will blow that away. I have a 3rd rig set up to be a linux server, it has a Athlon XP 1800 on a Nf7-S2G, I would like to find a good deal on another socket A chip to upgrade that. The good XP chips have went up far in price.

Thanks for your comments!

2.6 will be easy for your 3700+. you shouldn't even need to up the voltage. It should be a pretty stable system.

Yes, you should definently be able to hit 2.6Ghz. The new Sandy steppings are OCing like crazy (KAB3E stepping). Alot of people have been able to hit 3.0GHz on air.

your cpu should be very similar to mine

running 11x250 for a 2.75Ghz oc got my RAM 1:1... yours will be different, you'll have to test then out to see what they can do.

here's a good guide to get your started overclocking:
http://www.overclock.net/faqs/31782-...limits-my.html

just a note, on your mobo you'll have to run a 2T command rate w/ anything higher than 240mhz
