So completely without PATA? What are you supposed to do about CD/DVD drives? I've seen a couple SATA DVD drives, but they're not very common and at least double the price of IDE.

Well, you can always get a pci IDE controller card, unless you can't afford the $10 that they cost. I would really like a SATA DVD drive, but I have only seen 1 model, and it was rather pricey.

This is the one you are talking about right Lando? IMO, it really isn't that bad of a price. I do remember however reading that the IDE version actually performed a little better than the SATA.

I didn't realize how much the prices have fallen off since the 716s were released.

Yeah, that is the one. The IDE performed better than the SATA?? How is that possible?

I saw that drive when it came out like a year ago, it was like 250!! Price really dropped.

My guess is that the drive can't keep up with the transfer speed of SATA. Doesn't seem logical that a PATA drive is faster than a SATA drive... Humm, I guess that the PATA drives are more devloped than the SATA drives..

As long as IDE has been around, it does not really surprise me. And I am sure that the sustained rate of transfer for the ide is more consistent and maybe a bit faster. But.. even if you have ide ports on your mobo, a pci ide controller would take a load of the mobo, and would be alright for rom drives.
