Can leaving a CD/DVD in its drive cause any damage?

Ok I'm not sure where this should go, but can leaving a CD/DVD unused over long periods of time (24hrs) in its drive cause any problems? Computers, Wii, PS2/3 etc.

No, but the sound of a disk in a PC tray all the time is EXTREMELY annoying because its always spinning the disk up.

My personal experience says yes, but that was with a 98 packard bell that felt like spinning the cds everyother minute, needless to say, tiny specks of dust can render alot of fallout 2 cds useless.

My Daughter has her DVD player playing, all night every night!
And DVD players last her around 13 months!
Whereas my DVD player in my lounge is 3-4 years old!

So I say it causes wear!

But obviously not if it's turned off

Not to the CD, I even want to say that motors shouldn't suffer any major wear or tear (as they essentially are magnets, and electromagnets).
