Your help with hard drive setup

Thread Starter
If you happened to catch my thread on my smoked hard drives:
Smoked Hard Drive

You know I am in need of a new hard drive arrangement.
Well, I am getting both drives RMA'd they are:
  • 36gb WD Raptor - 10,000 rpm 8mb cache
  • 200gb Maxtor Diamondmax 10 - 7,200 rpm 16mb cache

So I have a complete fresh start to setup here, fresh windows Xp Home install, games, etc.
Now, where I would like to get all of your input.
What should I do?
  • Sell them, get a new drive arrangment? If so, what?
  • Sell one get another to match the keeper, run raid setup? If so, which one to keep and which to sell?
  • Keep them both and set them up similar to the way I had before; windows, programs, page file, on the Raptor; Games, benchmarking programs, storage, on the Maxtor?
  • Keep them both, but set them up differently from the way I had it? If so what way should I set them up?

Notes:
I've got some time to hear all your thoughts on this, about a week I imagine. Until I get the drives in my hands.
I do have a little cash on hand for purchasing something else.
Oh, also, the hard drives in question go in rig in my prof. It is obviously down and the only access I have to the internet at home. So I will only be able to get your input and comment back at work.

Ok overclockers...........discuss!!

[*]Keep them both, but set them up differently from the way I had it? If so what way should I set them up?

do the above. keep windows and all your programs files and everything else on the raptor with being the primary drive. keep the second drive as a storage space. dont partition the raptor. partition the maxtor into half if you want to. its pretty straight forward that way.

OS on Raptor, any critical apps ditto, other stuff on Maxtor...Sounds about right--I'd add that you might want to specify the Document's target to a folder on the Maxtor, may be on it's own partition....the only benefit to a partition oon the Raptor for the OS would be either a dual boot or to facilitate reloading the OS--

Thanks!! What are the pros and cons to this way, and the way I had it before? Obviously the speed of the Raptor, but what about the 16mb cache on the Maxtor?

Anybody voting for a raid setup?

no votes for a RAID unless u have another raptor. at least not from me. the cache is good but the the seek time on the raptor in my opinion outruns the cache on the maxtor. hence the suggestion. but u would still see that the data files being on maxtor would benefit from the cache in terms of repetitive loading and such.

I think if you can keep the raptor and get another 200gb hd(probably like $60-$90, then run those two in raid, all your installed progs will be a lot faster

Ok, so either get another Raptor and raid the raptors. or sell the maxtor and get another raptor.
Thats why I had my games on the maxtor, benefit of the cache for loading.

Theres the clayman! Yeah, thats not a bad idea either. The maxtor is slightly cheaper than the raptor. Though i could pick up another raptor for $110 abouts

I assume you have four SATA ports on your board. If so, get another raptor and do either RAID 1 or 0 with the two of them. Then use the Maxtor as a document drive and the Raptor(s) for programs. If you want to back up your docs, get another Maxtor and do RAID 1.
