1600 running at 1033?

Hi All.

Very new to OC'ing and am looking for some basic help before I break something

First off, when I boot up, the post screen only shows the ram is running at 1033. I have 6 sticks of Corsair TR3X6G1600C9 XMS3 and it recognizes all 12gigs just fine, but am curious as to why its not running at 1600?

In the BIOS it is set to AUTO, but there are options for 1033, 1333, 1600, 1800, etc.

Is it as simple as just setting it to 1600 and leaving the volts on AUTO or am I asking for trouble?

Everything else is running at stock settings for the moment as I wanted to tackle this first. That is unless other settings will affect the RAM settings?

hi there welcome to OCN

if ur pc is at default speeds, the memory will run at 1033 assuming is has multi of 8x.

EDIT: you can make them run at there specified speed but u will need to change the ram multi to 12.

u can leave the multi at 8x and when u overclock ur cpu by the BLK your ram will correspond with it.

example - stock is blk of 133 x 25 cpu multi

when u overclock ur cpu to lets say 4ghz

thats 160 blk with 25 cpu multi

that will make ur ram run at 160 X 8 = 180.

if you want to run ur ram at 1600 u will need to set your blk to 200 and change ur cpu multi down to 20.

EDIT 2: this should help you understand what im talking about

Thanks. What about voltages or is that trial and error depending on all my components?

I wasn't sure if I needed to start separate threads on every component I want to tweak or just a "980x Mild OC" thread in the Intel General section?

I will be looking to do just a 3.8-4ghz OC as this is my daily work computer and it will be running 8-14hrs, sometimes at full load the whole day. It also needs to last a few years

Run the RAM voltage at the manufacture defaults, you can usually find it printed on the side of the RAM.

The default is 1.65v, but in the bios either 1.64 or 1.66 are my only options, it just skips over 1.65.
