Conroe aims to trump Athlon's processing performance - Page 4

Amd have always upped the stakes ,but intel seem to have pulled something out of the bag .But we will have to wait for the next generation Amd to make a fair comparison as ropey is right .The information he has given is both fair and sound .

How about the 8086? 80286, 80386, 8486. How about K5, K6?

Thus your statement (and opinion) is foolish and you could more easily be called a fanboy with that statement than I with mine.

OK, I may have this wrong, so please do correct me if I have but...

AMD CPU's do 9 Ops/Sec VS Intel's 6 Ops/Sec? Yeah? So a rough comparison of an AMD and Intel CPU in terms of performance is to say, for example, that an AMD CPU running @ 2GHz with 9 Ops/Sec is roughly equivalent to an Intel CPU running @ 3GHz with 6 Ops/Sec..?

If this is correct and the Conroe will perform roughly 20% more Ops/Sec than the equivalent AMD, does this therefore mean that the Conroe will perform 10.8 Ops/Sec (1.8 or 20% more) Ops/Sec than the 9 Ops/Sec AMD CPU's perform?

If this is also correct then that would mean the Conroe will perform 4.8 Ops/Sec more than a current mainstream Intel, which translates to 80% (with 4.8 divided by 6 and then multiplied by 100) more Ops/Sec than a current mainstream Intel...?

If it is 80% more Ops/Sec, does this mean that the a Conroe @ 2.66GHz will have the effective performance of a current mainstream Intel CPU running @ 4.78GHz with 6 Ops/Sec? If so, an effective 5GHz (compared to a current mainstream Intel CPU) would be a realistic possibility in overclocking terms..?

Based on what I understand of AMD's, Intel's and Operations per second I think I'm right in what I've said, but I am no expert, so I could be wrong...

If I am correct and this new chip has all the additional on-board cache as well, it's going to be real contender and a worthwhile alternative for many AMD users.

What do you guys think?

Id round 10.8 up to 11 cause you cant do 0.8 of an op...

But Conroe is gonna be so sweet. Probably the best CPU Intel has made so far.
Very nice!

I do belive the op/clock must be an even number?

I belive so... But my knowledge of the even number comes from P4 architecture. The Conroe architecture may be different in that it allows for odd numbers.

I'm no fanboy of any one company so when Vista is finally up and running I will buy whatever performs best.
