You have to look at overall performance of cache/controller combo, not just quantity. AMD chips have much lower latentcy cache than Intel does. That's comparing Pentium cache with Athlon cache though, so Conroe might have faster cache than a Pentium. The bottomline is that Intel is starting a new core designed from the top down, while AMD is still milking the end of their architecture. AMD won't be dominant again until they design a completely new architecture, but that's aways down the road. I expect Intel to hold a slight lead from this summer until next spring.
Edit: Btw, to answer the above 64 bit question, AMD traded 64 bit to Intel for SSE3
