External Hard Drive

Thread Starter
I am looking at getting an external drive, so when I go to Uni I can use it with the laptop I am getting. I am going to use it to store mainly music plus a few games.

I was wondering whether it is cheaper/better to get an external housing and put an IDE drive into it or buy an external drive?

I want atleast 120Gb of storage and would like one that will last me at least three years of usage without messing up, as I wont really have the money to buy a new one.

Thanks

I can't seem to find any external hard drives made by them for sale in the UK, though thanks for the suggestion.

To be honest I don't think it really matters since most external hard drives sold by companies seem to be regular hard drives in proprietary external cases. How much are you looking to spend?

Around £100, which is about $170 though stuff is more expensive in the UK.

Right whats the difference between an external SATA and an external IDE?

can the SATA still run faster even though they both use USB?

There is around £10 price difference, so is it worth it?

Thanks

I'd say buy an OEM drive and an enclosure you know will be compatible. Most of the time the online sites will suggest an enclosure with the hard drive.

However, I'm not sure if it's good to be running the actual games from the external drive. Anyone know about this?

$90 can get you a 260gb drive.

I wouldn't run games off an external usb/firewire hard drive. They will load slow. Music will be just fine. And no, sata will not help in a USB enclosure, but you can use a long sata cable and enclosure to connect the drive directly to the sata ports. Though, if you're planning on using it with a laptop, that's not an option, yet.

So it's just a load time issue? Or will the game just run slow? Will it harm the drive in any way?

Thanks for all your help, I got kitted out with a 250GB drive and enclosure. How fast should I expect it to run, I used HD tune and it gets around 1MB/s is this slow or acceptable?

Thanks again
