7800gt power req.

Thread Starter
Greets, all; lurker turned poster here.

I'm finally to the point where I'm putting together my 'upgrade' and it could entail a 7800gt, depending on how things go the next week...

I noticed it "required" a 450watt PSU and I've already a 400watt on order and shipping to me; should I worry and RMA the 400w for a 500w or can I pull it off being 50watts short? (My sys is fairly barebones; 1 pata HD, 1 DVD, 19" LCD, not much else)

A friend suggests I don't worry about the difference, as the "minimum recommended" is just to cover the vid card manufacturer's arse and most PSUs don't actually push the wattage they claim. Can anyone confirm/expound on that for me?

As always, thanks in advance;

Thx for the reply!

Do you mean with the hardware I'm running, or for that card specifically?

Newegg.com says eVGA 7800gt requires a 450w PSU...?

I suspected the SLI thing; just talked to said 'friend' and he agreed it was for SLI, which I won't have to worry about for a while. Sweet... now let's just hope everything comes together.

Thanks again; back to reading...

Yeah I dont think a GT is THAT much of a power hog. My 6800GS works great on my Antec 350W. What PSU are you getting?

Ultra ULT31840 V-Series 400W ATX Power Supply

I couldn't pass the deal up; $9.99 after rebates and free shipping, and this upgrade is on a severely limited budget... particularly if I want a 7800.

Hmm I dunno about that one man. Looks Questioable. Better off just spending 40-50 $$ and getting a well known brand that WILL work great. A cheap 400W may not be enough for a 7800GT

EDIT: It takes months to get that $30 mail in rebatre back. Might as well and just spent it now.

I COULD BE wrong =+

i dont use rebates personally, you could try it since your on a budget and it will mostly likely work at least for while but if it were me i would scrape together some more money and get a little better psu.

Nahhh..I agree that a cheap 400W PSU won't be enought for the 7800gt. I had A No Name 480W PSU (that thing was not heavier than a penny) and I had a lot of power problem. But like I said It was really cheap maybe the one your are looking for is better but I recommend a good brand PSU. ex: OCZ, Seasonic, Enermax, etc.
