Yeah i'm going to recommend one to my friend who isn't that big of a gamer but wants to play A.O.E.3 on his new rig.The sad part is he has a better job and makes more money then i do but i bought a way better rig(may have something to do with the processor i got for free).

Basically, I have $250 to get a 17" LCD monitor and an AGP video card. The monitor will hit me for around $190 plus shipping, so the $50 for the vid card is all that is left.

They just want something basic, so I am looking at the lower end stuff. They have one for like $187 right now. This is a computer for the wife to process loans first, and my B-I-L to game a far 2nd.

Well, if you had to choose between the ATI 9550 and the NVIDIA 6200, then you should get the 6200. However, you should take note that it can almost barely withstand 30 frames in most modern games such as Half-Life 2 and Doom 3 at 1024x768 0xAA/0xAF. You probably might have to play at 800x600 to get a playable rate.

If you can score a cheap 9800 Pro, then that would be really great because it would just destroy the 9550 and 6200 (it really is that much better compared to those cards).

Oh I know. I have been bidding on a ton of 9800Pros lately, and they have not gone well. Just got the 1, and like I said, I am keeping that one for me.

Have a look for an ATI Radeon 9500 non-pro...if you select the correct RAM layout(L-shaped instead of 4 chips along top of board) it should soft-mod to a 9700 Pro easy..i got one couple months ago for £22 as new on E-bay UK and there always seems to be likely modders on sale in UK anyhow...overclocks very well too, over 9700 pro stock speeds.Theres a thread or two here on the specifics.£22=$38.I got it after busting my 6600 gt(at £140)..tbh it not much less of a performer than that, wish id got it 1st.

Prices have dropped a bunch on ATI 9600XT's, not far from a 9800 128 Pro.
Also try 9700 Pro on Ebay, or 9500 Pro and flash it.

No, you can softmod a 6200 to a 6600, but the thing with that is: The chances of your card being able to is slim to none. It does happen, but not very often.
