also which temp is right? bios says 60c but using asus utilties in windows it shows 50c
I think he was looking at the rig in your signature, which wouldn't be worth 3 grand.

Getting back on track.........

Here are my temps with my 920.....

Stock Settings with stock HSF and AS5
55c idle
73c load

Needless to say, I ordered a new heatsink IMMEDIATLY.

Stock Settings with Zalman 9500 w/ generic heat compound

42c idle
55 load

OC to 4Ghz with Zalman 9500 w/ generic heat compound

44c idle
62c load

I used the generic compound with the Zalman as I wanted to benchmark the difference AS5 will make.

My average ambient temp in the room is approx 23c, and I have a mid tower case with 2 80mm intake and 2 80mm exhaust, with a 140mm exhaust on my PSU that pulls right off the rear of the mobo and HSF.

The HSF that Intel ships with the Preslers is obviously trash (although some guy posted on Newegg that his 920 runs at 23c on the stock cooler......I think he's full of it, or his computer is packed in ice.....)...which is suprising, as my old 478 Prescot ran pretty cool in the same case at stock settings with the stock HSF......I don't know what Intel did, but the design isn't that good.

I know everyone recomends the Typhoon, and I know it's a good strong cooler (especially since you can always put a more powerful fan on it), but I am quite happy with my Zalman 9500 as it dropped my temps nicely, and I am sure with some AS5 it will go even lower (also, one of my case fans is probably not that great, so that probably doesn't help)......and the 9500 looks cooler than the Typhoon

BTW - In tests, the ASUS PC Probe read about 5 degrees cooler than the real temp (this was an average over several tests), not sure about PC Probe 2. Not sure how accurate the BIOS temp would be, but with that info you should be able to get a closer idea.....

I think the first you should do as stated above is reseat the HSF with some AS5 and see if that doesn't help. I've built over 50 custom rigs and that usually seems to be the problem 9 out of 10 times.
If that doesn't help I would return the Zalman and get the typhoon and I know it would fit in your case because I have the same one and used that until I went to a WC setup.
Lastly I would check the exhaust fan on the top of the case. If it isn't working or is mounted in the wrong direction it will create a large dead spot right near your CPU which could also be causing the problem.(I've had this happen as well.) So try those out and let us know how you make out.

Ok, when you say after it loads and in windows, using the ASUS program, that 50c reading is with the computer just sitting there doing nothing?

When you are in the BIOS, the CPU does work a little, I usually see about 4-6 degree over my idel in the BIOS.........

What ASUS program are you using? is it PC Probe or PC Probe 2? Or is it the AIBooster window?

As I said before, the PC Probe has been found to be several degrees low on it's readings in tests, no idea on the PC Probe 2, but the AI Booster window on mine has been really close to the readings from other programs like Speedfan.....could be they are just wrong together, but I doubt it.

Download SpeedFan and see what it says.........

OK, I must have missed where you mentioned that, 2 Prime95s is definatly a full load,

50c is pretty good, mine runs at 62 with dual Prime95s running......

Like I said, download Speedfan and see what it says. Your BIOS shouldn't be showing that different from the AIBooster as they run off the same sensor........your BIOS shouldn't be hotter than a full load on both cores, that's.....well, pretty impossible.

Just an off question, your BIOS is reading in C right? not F?

Just making sure.......

anyway, if Speedfan says the same, or close to the AIBooster, than you should be fine....if it's way off, then you know there is a problem.....
