Ontop of that, If your going to be running extremely extensive tasks over a long period of time, You wouldn't want a high overclocked system with even the slightest stability issues, Correct?

Why would you have him go with an Intel and have to get new ram when he can use the 2GB sticks he already has?

i agree starting from scratch with only a 1000 junior bacon chessebugers.
go DFI nf4 DR,opy 165 for multitreading,150 singal thread, a good overclock would still provide stabilty. shouldnt be a prob, good PSU will help
opty 165 = 325.00
opty 150 = 335.00

DFI nf4 dr = 168.00
good PSU = 125.00

apx negg prices

with the extra money maybe 2x74 or 4x36 raptors.

starting from nothing intel will be a better choice

Ok, thank you all for your posts. Picking up on the mention that I could wait for the Conroe to come out... Suppose I do wait for Conroe. And suppose I told you I have to spend my grant money ($3,000) by July, what should I buy?

I have no problem starting from scratch. I have a decent PSU (COOLER MASTER Real Power RS-450-ACLY ATX12V 450W), and I'll get a 74 GB Raptor for fast writing, but what else? I don't really know the technical jargon very well, but I would want to have the system be able to support Microsoft Vista OS. What does that mean for 64-bit technology and the hardware components I would need to get?

If you were in my situation where you run memory-intensive command line programs (Bayesian and Likelihood algorithms) that can last a month or two, as well as GUI-based programs (GIS and other apps), and occassionally want to play Battlfield 1942, what would you recommend?
MOBO:
Graphics Card (I will be running 2 flat panel monitors; should I get 2 graphics cards?):
RAM (RAM Coolers too?):
CPU (dual core processor is probably a necessity, but it needs to be fast... >3 ghz):
CPU Cooler (fan or evaporative or what?):
ANything else?

Thank you very much. croceator
