i7 920 first time build

Hi, new guy here.

My old AMD 64x2 3800+ system is in dire need of replacement so i'm going to build one myself for the first time. I'm going to use it for 3d modeling/animation, photoshop and ofcourse some gaming. I also want to try overclocking ofcourse.

I already have the case and psu:
Silverstone Raven RV01B and a Corsair HX850W

What i still need:
CPU: Intel Core i7 920 D0

CPU cooler: Scythe Mugen2 Rev.B (Not sure about this one, I'll gladly pay a bit more for a better cooler. Suggestions?)

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R

RAM: Don't know yet! I'm looking for a 12GB set that would limit my oc the least. So suggestions would be very welcome.

GPU: a 2GB version of the HD5870

HD's: Intel Postville x25M 80GB for os and apps (maya, photoshop and such)
2x Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB in Raid0

Optical: Sony DVD/RW AD-720S-0B

Don't need a OS, and I'll get a new screen etc later.

If you want a better cooler, this cooler is amazing. For ram, using all 6 DIMM's reduces you're overclocking ability, while getting a 12GB set that only uses 3 DIMM's costs twice as much.

GPU - SAPPHIRE 100290SR Radeon HD 5870 (Cypress XT) 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready
I picked this baby for my new rig and it rocks! Picked it up from amazon.com, though. $499 out the door - no tax, free shipping.

Good luck with your build, buddy!

You don't need an eyefinity 6 unless you have 4+ monitors. Even if you have one monitor, with 2gb you would see much of a difference. I think for a cpu cooler I would get a Corsair H50. I also don't think you need 12gb of ram unless you're doing video editing, or a program that renders lots of things. You won't see a difference in games with 12gb. Everything else looks good.

Thank you for the replies !
Went with the Prolimatech Megahalems Rev.B with two Yate Loon D12SH-12's.
As for the ram, wel wanted 12gb for rendering in maya/3ds etc.
But I decided to go for a 6GB set first, and see if I need to add more later.
Is this any good?

or
http://tweakers.net/pricewatch/24311....html#tab:info
or other suggestions?

As for the GPU, well, read that more then 1GB of ram does make a difference in viewport preformance (I know the difference in gaming is minimal). Or is it not worth the extra cost (Don't want to waste money ofcourse xD)?

Thanks for helping out the scrub !

The first one is faster, just remember if you add another 3GB or 6GB later, your overclocking abilities will be hindered because you're using all 6 DIMMs..

Yes I know. Thanks for the quick reply, didn't know if timings or clockspeed was more important. I'll get the 1st set then .
