Kingston Hyper X - Page 2

If 1 GB is your goal Dual Channel 2x512MB would be better, but would be over your $120 max. I would consider this G-Skill Memory. It is PC4000 so it will run at a default of 250MHz. It will allow you more headroom for overclocking, and comes in under your price range.

yep, that's exactly what it will do. your board (actually all AMD skt 939 boards) operate at 200Mhz or DDR400 by default. any higher rated RAM will work (i.e. DDR433, 500, 550, 600) but they will all operate at DDR400 frequencies by default.

the advantages of faster RAM:
more headroom when overclocking. many budget DDR400 will only get to about 230mhz.
guaranteed to operate at DDR500.
when the system is run at stock frequencies you can tighten the timings to compare with most sticks of DDR400. so you don't really have any major drawbacks.

Since you want 1Gb you are better off getting 2x512 because then you will be able to run dual channel and most sticks of 512 are able to run better timings than 1gb sticks.

here are some examples (and yes I am giving links to newegg b/c tiger has screwed me over in the past and I refuse to shop there)

ddr400 1gb kits:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145450 I hate corsair, and have had mixed results w/ this pair, but most will get to just about DDR500 with relaxed timings

yeah, I saw your price range... I just picked a bunch of RAM that fits your budget.

for your budget the best would probably be one of these kits:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231012
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820146896
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145450
or for a bit more which would be better:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820148009
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231013

my bone w/ tiger is that a couple years ago I bought a D-link router and wireless card from them that had a rebate. I sent the rebate in and got a response from d-link saying the rebate wasn't valid. So I called up tiger and they denied ever having that router with a rebate on the day I purchased it. They said that if I could come up with something dated that said rebate they would give me the money... and when I told them I had the original invoice which had the date of my order and clearly stated there was a rebate the guy refused to let that work. I asked to speak to his supervisor... his comment was that the supervisor "does not want to talk to you." and then he hung up on me. As far as I'm concerned tiger has sealed their fate... i will never buy from them again even if they are cheaper and I always share my experience with others hoping to deter them from buying from tiger as well. I realize that where you buy your components is your decision, but I don't want others to experience the same thing that I have.

Yeah, I posted those earlier and for the price I think they're a steal. they run 2-3-2-5 timings which is quite good, especially for value/cheap RAM. most of the other kits in your price range run 2-3-3-6 or 2.5-3-3-8 or so. Plus, g.skill makes quality RAM. I'm actually thinking about getting a g.skill 2gb kit if I can come up with some cash.

here is a review:
http://www.pureoverclock.com/article25.html
looks like they got their kit to DDR520 which is quite good for value RAM. (best I've ever seen. most value priced RAM is lucky to hit DDR440)

I don't mean to double post... I just missed the last post and thought this topic would be dissimilar enough to warrent a new post.

I think I'd personally go for one of these:
g.skill
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231012
I read a couple reviews where these sticks got to DDR500, I posted one earlier
ocz platinums
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820146896
ocz makes great RAM, the platinum line are made specifically for overclockers. while the entry levels don't oc near as well as the better ones, you should still be able to get in the DDR440-500 range

I'd get one of those two kits for your price range.

if you can squeeze a bit more out then I'd go for one of these two kits:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820148009
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231013
it looks like people are getting DDR550 or so with those kits... so if you're planning to OC they might be well worth the extra $20. or so.

one thing to keep in mind... while high performance RAM is always best and keeping a 1:1 ratio will most times give you the best performance if you do get a kit that just can't keep up w/ your cpu you can run it on a dividor.
