Mom wants a new computer... - Page 3

if its going to be at least 3 years a more future proof system would probably be better, for budget i went with an hp(yes i know) that seems to be along the lines your looking for, 3800+X2, 1 GB PC3200 RAM, a 250 GB HD, DVD/RW dual layer with lightscribe, and i managed to overclock it to almost 2.3 ghz via clockgen, just a thought, oh and that with a 17" CRT and an All in one printer only set me back 680 after rebats get here.

PS HP used a toledo core 3800+ X2

I am paying her for the new motherboard and power supply (which I would get anyway, and don't want going to waste), I'm not going to rob my mother

What about the ASUS EN6600/TD/256?

Is it a good card?

Your pockets must be lined!

I'd say in her case forget the A64, it isn't needed. A Sempron would be more than adequate. And a 7800GT??? LMAO it's not like she'll be playing games anyway. Watercooling would be a bit excessive. A CNPS7000 would be REAL quiet.

Stick with a Radeon 9600 or a FX 5700....ANYTHING but onboard. They do nothing but take away from precious system RAM.

BTW, your system would be about three times as expensive as a Dell.

Actually, for the things she sounds like she does, a low-end P4 with Hyperthreading would probably be better for her.

I mean, I love AMD gaming machine, but my P4 machine whoops it when it comes to multitasking and picture/video editing and such...

And seriously, she only needs a very low-end card even a 6600 would be overkill.

My rec:
Low end P4 with HT.
Minimum 1G of decent valueram
Lotta drive space.
1 decent combodrive.
zalman cpu cooler.
case that uses 2 120mm fans
And a good, cheap sub-$100 ATI card with passive heatsink(even a $50 x300 128MB card will do just fine). ATI simply has better image quality than Nvidia (not that I'm slamming Nvidia or anything)

For the vid card, what about a $52.99 ASUS EN6200TC TOP/TD/128M Geforce 6200TC 128MB 64-bit GDDR2?
Or would I be better off with a Radeon X300 SE?

Come to think of it a Celeron ~3Ghz would be adequate too. And no more than 1 gig of ram is really nessesasy unless she'll be playing BF2 or working with MASSIVE Photoshop files.

But if you want to use your AMD mobo then stick with the Sempron.

What are the main differences, in performance, not price, between an Athlon 64 and a Sempron 64?

You can get a non- TC for about the same price and it would be better. But I think the x300 would be fine.

Semprons have less cache and the HT is 800 not 1000.
Semprons are GREAT overclockers too.
