Mom wants a new computer... - Page 4

So a 6200 or an X300 for graphics?

For the X300, would Hypermemory, SE, or normal be better?

Off topic: Does the X stand for 10k? (eg X1900=11900?)

I talked to her (she is fairly tech saavy-- used to write computer manuals for Sun), and she would prefer the higher HT and cache, and overclocking is not her main priority. However, do Semprons come socket 939?

if she wants high cache, tell her to get the CPU I posted. the clawhammer DTR.
Semprons only come in s754 with 128k or 256k of cache...

Semprons are GREAT overclockers too.

(see my specs)

Well it depends on the socket/chipset. Socket 754 only has 800Mb/s HT while socket 939 has 1000Mb/s HT.

Even an A64 on a socket 754 would only be 800Mb/s HT.

First off, Get a big, quiet, btx/atx compatible case. Next, Get a good watercooling kit, Since it's a meh build get a thermaltake big water SE. Next, I'd say go for a 3800 for the future and generic 1 gig of ram. For a PSU get something nice and passive, I believe TT makes a passive PSU. Make sure to get a wire suspender thinger mabob for your harddrive to make it rattle less. That's about it. Oh yeah, Fan filters! Get some good silent 120 mm fans. For a case as mentioned above I suggest the TT armor and the water cooling kit. For a mobo get any you want that supports dual core 3800 aslong as it's cheap and the chipset cooling is passive And for a video card An undervolted and downclocked 6800 would be way more than she'd ever need.
