The iPod Touch and iPhone were not bad in that senseas they competed with Blackberries and WinCe. Now there's Android coming in full force with as many apps and more every day, and Apple's going to form-factors that enable the use of full-fledged operating systems with great established x86 systems. Not to mention the complete freedom of developers.

Nothing out there, it's created a new genre of tablets and three are no liable competitors unless you consider knock offs from China.

Why do you suppose HP canned the slate and Microsoft canned Courier? The Asus tablets aren't even expected to be released until 2011 and until google gets on their ass and works on android for tablets, you won't even see any liable android tablets until 2011 too... The Dell streak which is being released is a larger smartphone because it has to be in order to access the google marketplace.

Problem with android is that google is heavily pushing free apps in the platform, this makes it harder for paid developers to profit from their work and gives them less incentive to publish for Android. Besides, googles might not eve allow their app market for android tablets, there Is no indication google is pushing for android on tablets. Most likely they are working on ChromeOS for tablets.

They're pretty much identical except one runs Archos/Android OS and the other one iPad/iPhone OS. There's even a 7-inch version w/ARM and a 9-inch version w/x86.
Is it a big playing field? Last estimates were 1million units a year for tablet pcs.... The iPad has sold 2 million in 2 months with no indication of slowing down in sales.

It hasn't created a new genre. All it did was put it's own popular Ipod OS on a tablet. There are better ones that came out before, and better ones that came out after. They just don't have Apple's marketing. Where it's at is Linux, Android, Windows.

Because they were too innovative and awesome? Why name those two when countless others were released before and after the iPad?

The Asus tablets are great, but you don't have to wait to find similar ones. And Android is great right now, no need to wait for Google to do anything. And it's only getting better, as opposed to the Ipod OS which isn't really going anywhere at this point.

So the problem with Android is that it costs less. Yeah I'm not sure that's so bad after all. In fact I think it may be an advantage.

Just because the iPad sells more than other Tablets doesn't make the others not exist.

Better to have the storage and not use it than to need the storage and not have it, I say. If I were to skimp on something, it would be the 3G...but my personal use case would be to use it around the house, I wouldn't be wanting to carry it with me everywhere and expect an always-on connection.

Right. Because it will be exactly the same in ten years as it is today. Just like every other computer ever made...we all know that once a device is released, it is completely stagnant from that day forward and will never, ever improve.

Oh wait...that's a bunch of crap, isn't it. But that's the only way to explain your statement, so your statement must also be a bunch of crap. Hmm, fancy that.

Selling well means you've found a market for something people will want and are willing to pay for. By any business definition, that's a good product. Whether or not better products exist is a whole different question.

I guess we can safely say there's either a guaranteed 2 million people who would lick Steve Jobs' butt dry or 2 million people with a lot of money to waste.

I have no argument against the iPad, it's a brilliant product. It works, it does what it says on the box, and it looks sleek and performs quite well. I do have a problem with the price however, and if Apple think I'm paying upwards of £429 for an iPhone on steroids they've got another thing coming.

What are stupid post. You claim the people that buy the iPad are essentially "ass lickers" for buying it, but then claim it's a brilliant product.

I just don't get some of you people.

I'll make a new thread when they sell 2,000,001.

...then another when they sell 2,000,002. We need more of these threads.

i got a laptop. it does everything an ipad does and more.

the ipad fad will wear off soon, people will realize that it is quite limited in what it can do, and then realize that they still need a laptop to do most of the things they need.

$500 for mobile internet is a bit costly.
