I think this more or less explains what's going on with the point system:

Quote:
A very interesting paragraph. Points are important because they measure the value of our contribution. If you devalue the points you are at the same time devaluing peoples contribution, especially their current contribution. In your pursuit of optimizing the production of the current "hot" projects, do not forget the value of all the other projects.
I think we can agree that the use of "Mega Bonuses" has put stress on the project as a whole. To avoid this I suggest some guide lines.

Try to address new "hot" projects to the installed or naturally growing base, and no more than a 25% bonus. Make clear why these projects are valuable, and I believe you will find more than enough people will volunteer to help out.
When feel you need to distort your mix of capabilities, for a specialized task, no more than a 50% bonus. This is enough to move those who care most about points and have compliant machines to make the move immediately, and the rest to move over quickly if they can. Those that won't most likely would not regardless of the bonus.

Make clear why the bonus is being issued, and why it is important from the beginning, and what it's future will be. Also make it clear that the bonus is not permanent and can and will be changed as the situation warrants.

Don't forget that all your Folders care about the project, and will willing help out if they can.

I suggest this as a basis for making a policy, the actual policy will need to be flexible to deal with the unpredictable needs of the project. With adequate communication and integrity to the point structure, the very diverse F@H community will continue to move forward towards the understanding of proteins, which is our common very long term goal.

PS Thanks for the release of v5 bonus WU's, it is appreciated. (I see you have taken my suggestion that the bonus was too high on those units, and reduced it. They are now worth 292 pts instead of 364. Has anyone complained?)
I believe they use points to direct folders where they need it. The ones that are point hungry will follow the biggest yield (ie. GPU and SMP). It works well really considering all things involved, mostly the hassle of getting it to work! It's the carrot steering the pack and the point difference has been pretty healthy, like with SMP. I think it's pretty clever really and does the job. I think they are trying to keep the ones who are complaining about being left in the dust happy too. They don't want to lose folders obviously and I don't think there is an easy answer. WinSMP should make a lot of people happy, at least for a good while as quads just came out and not many have them yet.

All in all after 6 months now, I still think folding is fun and hope it does exactly what it intended to.

Hey cappy,

That's GREAT!!! What an accomplishment! I'm really happy for you...

It's something you can be very proud of...

Now to stay there in the face of all the competitors these days

Well, with mainly just the big guys coming after me now, (keep in mind it says 500 PPD atm, but as i said before, i can complete one a day) so around 1000-1700 ppd i dont think ill have to much of a problem with getting passed. As of right now, even only at 500 iv got a while before something happens.

Hi guys,

Just an update of sorts. I've PM'd all of you and taeric as well...

Last night I stated up my second SMP rig. It's working on a p2605 - 1760 pointer and will complete on Friday. I've given what I'm about to say a great deal of thought. And I've agonized over this decision for over a week. But here's the deal: With 2 SMP rigs I can not be part of any team for the team competition. I guess I've grown beyond the 3 rig limit with 10 total.

cappy - with your new SMP rig and gpu rigs going you could become the lead on Folders Inc. Those rigs will put out a lot of points over months time. I know you could also add your Celeron and possibly 3500 in the future, so what you do will effect your membership as well. I just think that you should get all of the benefit of those SMP and gpu rigs... and continue into the top 50!

shajbot - you have been the most selfless person on the team. Through your relationship with your school's admin and IT group you've had 10+ rigs folding for Team_Folders. Wow!! Never once did you ask to have them fold for you. Now might be the time. I know the school will be closing their doors for summer soon (3.5 months) and I think you should be able to take full advantage of the school's rigs, if you so desire. You have lead the way with the attitude of it's not the points, it's the science! However, with that said, you are close to the top 100 and those rigs could certainly put you over the top. Again it's your choice...

hvac - You are our newest member and I have not really been able to get to know you. And for that I'm truly sorry. Perhaps over the up coming months in this thread, that will become a reality. Take care of yourself and with all of this bad weather, don't work too hard.

LBN - You are the team's founder and mentor. I'd like to thank you for the opportunity to be part of this great team. We didn't win any awards, but we have almost the highest posts in a team thread and certainly the most views of any team thread. Quite an accomplishment and it's only been one year to boot!!

peroxide - If you're out there. Take care and I hope life delivers everything you desire...

With permission from all of you, I'll continue to post here and check in. It's been a great ride, and a lot of fun getting to know you guys, but I've outgrown my ability to be on a team.

Take care everyone, :-)

Okay Guys,

Work has tapered off and I`m home a little early today. So I`m fixin` to shut down and do my mod/upgrade and install my new 3.4 gig chip. I`m going to sacrifice some points to do this because my present W.U. won`t be finished until about 2 A.M. Friday morning. But, `Ya gotta` do things when `Ya can. Wish me luck. `Hope to have it back up by tomorrow.

We'll miss you Buick, stick around. In that case, if you're leaving the team, I would like to officially announce my return to the roster for Folders Inc. My system has been stable for a while, and even though I don't get a whole lot of points, we won't be the worst team on OCN.

Hi LBN,

Thanks!! You have been the best "mentor" a team could have!! I agree with you. Allow cappy to use his 3 rigs (SMP and gpu), shajbot to use 3, with you and hvac having one each.... You'll give them a go, no doubt about that!!!

I will check in often and be the "un-official" team cheer leader or mascot!!! In case you haven't noticed, I will complete 2,978 points today alone!! Both SMP rigs will complete tomorrow for 1,760 each or 3,520 total. With those 2 and the gpu I'll have 4,180 points tomorrow, I hope!

Take care and all my best to you and the team! :-)

Hi hvac,

Good luck! It should turn out Ok! I hope the bad weather in the country's mid-section does not effect you!

Take care, :-)
