3800x2: Some Q's...

Thread Starter
Ok, so far I've got my 3800x2 up to 300x9=2.7Ghz and 1.5v. That puts my Corsair XMS Platinum (on the 166:200 divider) at 245Mhz 2.5, 3, 4, 8. It's idling at -14C.

Now, my first question is: How do I check for stability? I know to run Prime95, but what should I do now that I've got two cores? I've found where to change the affinity to an individual core, but I can only run one instance of Prime at a time. If I double-click the icon, it just brings my original window back up.

What else should I be looking for? This is my first experience with anything dual-core and I don't know where to start...

I'll get some screenshots once I check for stability and performance.

One instance is fine. Just run the 32m version. If it completes that then you are more than likely stable. Try running F@H at the same time as prime 95.

hmm, so hold on a sec, if i were to overclock to 2.7 with ram timings of 2.5, 3, 4, and 8 would that still make my computer run faster than 2.6ghz with ram timings of 2.5, 3, 3, 6? Or would it be slower?

Any difference would be tiny but I would say the 2.7 would be faster.

get "sp2004" it does the same thing as prime95, but has a more friendly user interface and you can set two instance two the two cores by justb bringing up another window. just google search "sp2004" and find a download for it. they also have it at www.majorgeek.com . also make sure that when your testing the the cpu on this program that you set it to do the cpu stress test, which i bielive is the long htts.for some reason no matter what you will always fail if you set it to do both the cpu and ram....if you have any questions pm me or just put another post. -trey

ps. also what steppings do you have on your 3800+? i would tell you mine but im at work right now and i dont know off the top of my head, but i hit 3.0 @ 1.5v boot and sp2004 for 8hrs stable, and am running 2.55 @ 1.4 easy...and both worked on air =} at around 28°C idle and 36°C full load ( a thermaltake big typhoon.)

Nope you need to install twice. If you don't, you get an error every 6 seconds after a while. I did that, and installing it twice fixed it.

OK, I got two instances of Prime95 running (one on each core). I did a little more and it's at 2.8Ghz, but it's at 1.6v. You've got a Lanparty which has a MUCH more stable vCore. 2.8Ghz took a little while to get it to work so far. But I'm not giving up yet. I'll probably do a vCore mod so I can have a little more stability (test it on my 3000+ Winchester first lol).

One core keeps failing Prime... The other is still running, but after about 5 minutes it says "Rounding was 0.5, expecting less than 0.4." The other core just keeps chugging along. What of that?

Edit: When I got the box I was too excited to jot down the stepping and I just installed it. I may take it out to look, but I'm trying to get it stable first.

Also, I'm running XP x64 Pro edition if that has anything to do with anything...

Ok, the screenie of the highest I've gotten so far. Is this about where I should be? Or should the chip go a little higher?

Your well above the average, most only make 2.6, myself included (altho when wc is done I suspect 2.7 is possible). What's your super-pi 1M?
