I'd prefer ATi at the moment because they offer better power usage to performance ratio at the moment. Also, the nVidia cards run way too hot. An OCN member even had a pic of the plastic on his GTX 470 starting to bubble from the heat...

As far as scaling goes in multi-GPU setups, I think both scale pretty well right now. All I know is that Quad-fire scales horribly, but I'm guessing you're not going that far...

Is the HD5970x2 better than the HD5870x2 without wasting money per se?

Its around $1600 for 2x 5970s where the 5870s are $800

You mean will the 5970 be better than the dual 5870's? The dual 5870's will be faster because the GPU's on the 5970 are downclocked so as not to break its targeted TDP.

Anyway, I've got a build put together for you. It's got no case, no hard drives, and no optical drive right now. The subtotal comes out to $1,705.94. Hold on while I compile everything...

2x 5970 isn't really required, and the quad-fire support is lacking so scaling is way off with 4 GPUs.

The sweet spot would be 1x 5970 2GB (Or a 4GB version ) and 1x 5870 for Tri-fire. But who knows when ATI will release drivers that fix quad-fire.

EDIT: The 5970 is a dual GPU card, if you didn't know. Grabbing 2 would mean a quad-fire.
So you're comparing a Quad-fire with a crossfire, the results are obvious.
