Opteron vs. Athlon

Thread Starter
Ok, I have always wondered what is the difference BTW desktop and server processors... Especially after knowing that both Athlon and Opteron work on the same socket (not the same chipset I presume). The question is: does Opteron have any advantages for desktop user? Does it perform better in multitasking and processor time demanding apps? Does it increase responsivness?

Servers(opterons) are meant to run 24/7, day in and day out. Athlons are made for the Average user.

They are basically the same chip, except opterons are Tested longer for 24/7 use

Opterons are meant for servers so they usually have more relaxed memory controllers. Only the 1xx Opterons are socket 939. It doesn't perform much better than the comparable Athlon(double the cache of <3500+ though).
Not bad at all...

Right, Opterons are tested much more heavily before they ever reach the consumer. They also have increased cache compared to some Athlon modles and generally overclock better too. However the recent 3700SD steppings have been quiet impressive.

Heheh, you have any proof of any way, shape,or form to back that? You're absolutely nuts if you think Opterons are tested any more rigorously than Athlons or any other chip they manufacture. And no, they don't use better silicon, either. Compare an Opteron vs Athlon at equal clock speeds and you'll see that the Athlon slightly outperforms it. Why? Is it because Athlons are tested more? No. Is it because they use better silicon on Athlons? No. There's only 1 of 2 possibilities: 1) The cache settings are relaxed on the Opterons in order to increase stability...or 2) The memory controller settings are relaxed on the Opterons. That would explain not only the excellent overclocking of the Opterons, but also the slightly lower performance at equal clock speeds. Again, I challenge you to scrape up any form of proof that Opterons are tested to a higher level than any other chip AMD makes.

Nothing like the initial Opterons for 939.. People were hitting 3.0+ on stock cooling on some chips, the new SD's are a little harder to get to 3.0.

You ask for proof... do you have any of the contrary... perhaps this would put the issue to rest!

Can you prove you didn't commit murder? There isn't any evidence I'll look around, but finding proof of something NOT occurring is difficult. AMD has never released a single statement of any kind stating that Opterons are tested any more rigorously than any other product.....at least that I've seen and I've looked pretty hard. I'll try though, let's see what we find.....

SeaHawks fan? Bitter Much? You have any Proof they are not tested more?

And for your information I'v owned both a 3700+ and an Opty 148 they are bascially identical.... Nuff said
