[Project] Maximum Destruction

Story
I seem to be jaded lately and have forgotten why I started modding in the first place. After the debacle that became the May 2010 Mod of the Month contest in which I ended up withdrawing from, I stepped away for a bit to collect my thoughts. This is the culmination of those thoughts:

Maximum Destruction
June, 2010

This is not a form based mod. Think of it as a remedial course in case modding. Back to basics. if you are here wanting to see custom made or expensive aftermarket parts, I am sorry to say you are in the wrong thread.

Plan

The plan is the easy part. Take a beat to hell Antec 300, completely destroy it, take it down to nothing and rebuild it to greatness using minimal tools, measuring and money.

We begin with a beat to hell Antec 300 that has had an awful life. Before I got my hands on it, it has had a paint job. The problem is, the previous owner didn't bother to dismantle the case prior to painting and it really looks like ass. The paint is flaking off, scratched and just not done well at all. Here is the progression from this evening's adventure.

I had previously cut out a window for the case and don't think I managed to get 1 straight cut. I have terrible vision and I'm quite sure this played a part. Lot's of grinding / sanding / filing ahead.

Let the Destruction begin!

9000 Rivets later and 3 drill bits

At this point I wanted to make a hole for making a heatsink backplate accessible. The easiest way I found to do this was to drill a 4" hole in the motherboard tray and I can always fudge it later once I mount a board and see if it worked. Enter my Skil 18v do-it-all screwgun/drill/arm breaker.

This drill is bad ass. it literally hurts to put it on high torque and give it a squeeze when there is something tough to go through. This was going to be a breeze.....

Marked

Piloted

10 minutes later

/fail

Luckily I had some real tools on hand.
Enter $20 drill from Wal Mart

10 seconds later

Was satisfied with that hole that took way too long to cut out. Packed everything up, swept the floor and started drinking

Out of the blue, here I sit. My motherboard has succumbed to my abuse and died. I have no usable system to use, except for this shoddy laptop, I am bored and I have beer. My solution? DO SOMETHING.

Pile O' parts

Laid out

Beginning to piece back together

Then it dawns on me. Why put it together the way it's supposed to go? I can change a very few things and have....

A Techstation!

Much more to come later. I need to get it bolted together, make sure it's structurally sound, dismantle it for the second time, strip it to bare metal and give it a proper paint job before reassembly.

Nice idea on turning the case inside-out, Smashy!
